1. Unsolved Mysteries (2020)

2. Catching Killers

3. Cold Case Files

4. The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann

5. Mindhunter

6. The Keepers

7. And The Ripper

And if you’ve already watched every show on the list, I’m truly impressed.
If you’re like me, this show is where your interest in true crime started. But if you haven’t seen it yet, now is definitely the time. Each episode covers a different unsolved crime in a documentary-style format. You’ll get to hear all the baffling details from people directly involved in the case. With 15 seasons, this show has been running for decades, but the 2020 Netflix reboot is where I recommend starting for the most recent unsolved crimes.
Each season covers three murders that you’ve likely never heard of before. But in a refreshing take on true crime content, this show focuses on the people who caught the murderers more than the murderers themselves. You’ll still get to hear all the shocking details of every crime, but the focus will be on the criminals’ downfalls.
If you like Unsolved Mysteries, but just can’t stand the open endings, you’ll love Cold Case Files. Like Unsolved Mysteries, you’ll get thrilling documentary-style retellings of puzzling cases that were so difficult to solve, the trail of clues went cold. But with Cold Case Files, each of these cases were reopened years later and eventually solved, so you can sleep at night a bit better.
Unsolved true crime stories aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you can withstand them, you should try this show. Three-year-old Madeleine McCann went missing from her family’s vacation apartment in 2007. As far as the police know, she’s never been seen since. This show breaks down the curious circumstances surrounding the event and the main purposed theories. A whole season may seem like a lot to cover just one case, but trust me, with all the twists and turns in this one, it’s worth it.
A little bit different from the other shows on this list, Mindhunter is based on a true-crime novel written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. It follows two FBI agents (Holt McCallanyin and Jonathan Groff) in the 1970s interviewing serial killers to create the psychological profiling used to catch killers today. Their work gets them up close and personal with some of the world’s most notorious criminals. While some creative license is taken in the show, all the killers and their stories are very real.
Another show dedicated to just one unsolved crime, The Keepers is about the unsolved murder of nun Catherine Cesnik. Some believe her death was directly related to her suspicion that Priest A. Joseph Maxwell was sexually abusing students. The show goes deep into the facts and rumors of what went on in the school that Cesnik and Maxwell worked at, as well as their personal lives. With so many unexpected twists, it’s an easy show to binge-watch (I definitely did).
In late 1970s England, sex workers were being murdered by an unknown killer. The Yorkshire Ripper, as he was known, killed 13 women before his arrest. This show goes into the details of what took the investigation so long and how he was eventually caught. If you're looking for a fascinating breakdown of a case that is fortunately already solved, this is it.
