Made in Heaven, an Indian drama series created by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, premiered on Amazon Prime Video in March 2019. Starring Sobhita Dhulipala, Arjun Mathur, Jim Sarbh, and Kalki Koechlin, it instantly became a fan favourite.
The show chronicles the lives of Tara and Karan, two wedding planners based out of South Delhi, while also tackling many sensitive issues like class differences, dowry, homophobia, and sexual assault.
Made in Heaven received both critical acclaim and the love of the audience. Everything was great except for the fact that...THERE WAS NO SEASON 2 FOR THE LONGEST TIME!
However, the wait is finally over! Made In Heaven is finally back with a new season!
It has been four whole years since the first season came out, and a lot has happened since then (including the show being wiped out from most of our memories). Here is a recap, if you don't have the time and patience to binge-watch the debut season all over again.
1. The show starts with Tara and Karan running and managing their wedding planning agency called "Made in Heaven". Tara is married to Adil, a businessman from South Delhi, who has great generational wealth.
2. While she was once working as Adil's secretary in his company – given the fact that she came from a middle-class background — Tara is now a part of Delhi's socialite circle, where she meets Faiza.
3. Meanwhile, Karan lives by himself in an apartment complex that he shares with a strangely friendly yet complacent landlord who has a school-going daughter. Karan also has some financial troubles.
4. Moreover, he lives a dual life — hiding his sexual orientation in a country in which homosexuality was still illegal in 2018.
5. The season progresses as Made in Heaven gets established as a renowned agency, one wedding at a time.
6. You might remember Jaspreet ("Jazz") and Kabir, who also work at the agency. Jazz lives with her family, struggling to keep them afloat while also dealing with her brother's drug addiction. Kabir, on the other hand, is the omnipresent wedding photographer.
7. We are also introduced to Jauhari, played by Vijay Raaz, a loan shark who later becomes a silent partner in the agency.
8. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Karan, his landlord violates his privacy by planting a camera in his apartment and secretly recording (and watching) his private moments.
9. Tara suspects Adil of having an affair and confides to Faiza about it, who dismisses it by telling Tara that she's being paranoid. We then find out that it's actually Faiza who is having an affair with Adil.
10. Adil and Faiza go on a weekend getaway, but get into a car accident on their way home. Tara finds out about their affair post the crash and still agrees to donate blood to Faiza, who was in critical condition.
11. Tara confronts Adil about the aforesaid affair. He apologises and promises to make things right, but she rebuffs him.
12. In the meantime, Jazz buys clothes from a high-end boutique using the company's credit card. While she intends to return these clothes, she fails to do so. Shibani, a senior at the agency, reports this and Jazz ends up getting fired.
13. We also see Jazz’s brother stealing money and jewels from their parents' and disappearing. Jazz eventually finds him and brings him home. Kabir develops feelings for Jazz.
14. Karan’s landlord’s wife ends up finding videos of Karan on her husband’s laptop. When she confronts him, he lies to her and tells her that he was merely gathering evidence to file a police report. Karan is then arrested under charges of Section 377.
15. Karan spends a couple of nights in prison where he is sexually assaulted by a police officer. Tara eventually manages to bail him out.
16. We learn through flashbacks about Karan's mother being aware of his homosexuality and physically abusing him for the same, thereby leaving him with trauma. He finally decides to confront her in the present, and comes to terms with his sexuality with his family.
17. He decides to move back to his rented place and sue the landlord. The landlord, however, apologises to him, revealing that he also happens to be gay but was forced to hide his true self all his life.
18. Tara refuses to take Faiza's calls and later trashes her apartment out of anger — causing a deeper rift between herself and Adil.
19. As the weddings progress from Ludhiana to Jaipur, a flashback reveals that an intimate video of Tara and Adil's had surfaced when she worked as his secretary. Adil's father had offered money to silence Tara, which she had apparently refused. Adil, who was then engaged to Natasha, broke off his engagement and ultimately married Tara.
20. Karan decides to withdraw the case against his landlord for the sake of his daughter, who he is friends with. However, he decides to file a PIL against Section 377.
21. Tara and Karan arrange for Adil to meet Jauhari, who are both investors in Made In Heaven. Their interaction leaves a sour taste in everyone's mouths.
22. We also witness Jazz and Kabir have more moments together. After an altercation with a client, Jazz is left disturbed. When Kabir tries to console her, she brushes him off and tells him that he is not the kind of guy she is looking for.
23. We then progress to the last episode, where a wedding between two rival political parties is taking place under shady circumstances. Both Karan and Tara continue to struggle personally.
24. Karan's childhood flame Nawab reaches out to him through Facebook and we a flashback of a young Karan and Nawab, who both were in love. However, Karan is in denial when it comes to his sexual orientation and even leads a homophobic attack against Nawab in their school's locker room. This results in Nawab leaving school and Karan lives with the guilt of being the aggressor.
25. However, in the present day, the two reunite and spend the night together. Karan professes his love for Nawab and he forgives him.
26. Karan uses a public platform to vocalise his opinion against Section 377 — an event that turns out to be a success.
27. Tara is busy attending a small dinner party with Adil's family. During this time, Adil gets several phone calls from Faiza, which he eventually picks up. Tara decides to confront him about this and both end up fighting about their broken marriage.
28. Tara regrets how their relationship started with lies and deceit and it is revealed that she was the one who secretly recorded and exposed the intimate video of the two of them, in an attempt to marry into the family. This is when she realises that her life is truly shattered and that she is paying for breaking Adil's first relationship.
29. The show ends as Tara and Karan visit their office and find out that it has been vandalised by right-wing activists due to Karan's stand against Section 377. They laugh at their misfortune and, well, that's a wrap on Season 1!
We cannot wait to see what happens next! How will Tara and Karan keep the company afloat? What will eventually happen to Tara's marriage? Will we see Faiza and Adil together? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!
