Two Teens Wrote A Musical About Gen Z And It’s Pretty Amazing

(Which is only partially true).

But these two teens wrote an entire musical to prove them wrong.

Nick Sutton and Annika Schmitt wrote, directed, and produced “Gen Z: A New Musical”.

The cast of twelve rehearsed the entire show at the directors’ houses and backyards. The show was then performed at Portland Players Theater in August.

The show focuses on an unlikely group of teens who band together after their principal enacts a social media ban. Through their efforts to stop the ban and the unavoidable teenage drama that ensues, the group of high schoolers tell the story of what it means to be Gen Z.

“I never thought it would come as far as it did. I’m so immensely proud of everyone who made this show possible,” says Annika Schmitt, co-writer and director of Gen Z.

“So many television shows and movies have 25 year olds playing teens, and the writers don’t have a clue about what it’s really like to be in high school in 2019. We really just wanted to write a show that encompasses the culture of our generation,” says Nick Sutton, co-writer and music director.

When asked about the stereotyped characters in the show, Schmitt replied, “It’s not like we wanted to get rid of stereotypes about our generation. We just want the stereotypes to be more accurate than they currently are.”
