Oh Kraft, You Have My Heart

Mac And Cheese Burger Or A Fried Mac And Cheese Ball? Heck, I'll Take Both

I don’t like to brag or anything, but as a kid I was always a bit of an overachiever. Finishing first on the 100 question multiplication tests, beating the boys in the sit up contests, lining up first for recess - you know, the important things. But I would say my most impressive talent at the mere age of 8 was having the Kraft Mac and Cheese recipe memorized.

To me, it’s like riding a bike. Just as people always remember to hold the handlebars straight and not to stop peddling, I will never forget that all it takes for a bowl of pure happiness is 1/2 tbsp of butter and 1/2 cup of milk. I would whip up a box for lunch, my afternoon snack, dinner, heck even for breakfast, simply because I could. The feeling of being so independent and making something that tasted so good might have been more appealing than the delicious meal itself.

Real mac and cheese lovers never grow out of the Kraft stage. In fact, the happiest day of my freshman year of college was when my uncle sent me a care package that was filled to the brim with 14 Kraft mac and cheese boxes. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve branched out a time or two and tried other brands. Organic, low fat, everything in between, and it’s safe to say nothing compares. I frown upon people who think that Velveeta is superior, or Annies tastes better. My question to those people is “did you even have a childhood?”

Kraft mac and cheese reminds me of family. My sisters and I always standing over the plates my mom divided the box on to triple check we were all getting equal amounts. My friend and I debating if we should make one or two boxes because we were THAT hungry. Seven of my cousins hoping in our mini van after our parents went to bed during christmas break to go to Walmart and get half a dozen boxes - because everyone knows a cousin sleepover isn’t really a sleepover with out midnight mac and cheese. The memories itself is what keeps bringing me back, and the flavors not too bad either.

It’s simple to say you can’t trust Kraft mac and cheese haters. My ex boyfriend hated Kraft and was one of those Velveeta snobs, that should have been my sign right from the beginning to run for the hills. It’s one of those meals that you can’t go wrong with, especially if you’re adventurous. During my sophomore year of college, I had reached my one year anniversary of starting my internship. So, my boss took me and some coworkers out to lunch to celebrate. I scanned the menu and went back and forth. Suddenly, I saw it.

The beautiful, one of a kind, friend mac and cheese burger. I was sold.

My first bite was almost tear jerking, and I swear nothing will ever be the same.

Not even a month ago I was out with some friends at another restaurant where I ordered the famous fried mac and cheese bites with their famous sauce. Once again, my world was rocked. I had never experienced a more perfect combination of crispy and gooey, and boy was I in heaven.

I admit, I have a problem. You know it’s real when you’re grandma calls you to check up and asks if you’ve made mac and cheese recently. Or when your grandpa sends you a letter in the mail with an article about the best mac and cheese restaurants in town. But hey, sometimes you just have to own up to it. However, I could go to any restaurant and probably still wouldn't be as satisfied as I would be ask making a full box of Kraft mac and cheese in my kitchen, and eating the whole damn thing to myself.
