Aboriginal Man Found Dead In Darwin Correctional Centre

    Police are investigating how the man died.

    A 31-year-old man Aboriginal man has been found dead at Darwin correctional centre.

    A spokesperson for the NT Department of Correctional Services said the man was found at 6.30 this morning and was unable to be revived. The man was a low-security remand prisoner.

    There have been almost 400 Indigenous deaths in police and corrections custody since the royal commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody handed down its final report in 1991.

    In May last year, 59-year-old Aboriginal man Kumanjayi Langdon was found dead in Darwin’s police watch house, just three hours after being taken into custody.

    In July, Koori woman Rebecca Maher, 36, was found dead in a NSW police cell. She was the first Aboriginal person to die in a police cell in NSW since 2000.
