10 TV Shows That Needed More Seasons

A moment of silence for the shows that ended too soon - please note that Firefly is not on this list because it just goes without saying that it deserved better!

1. Pushing Daisies

Two Seasons, 2007-2009

Before Lee Pace played a hot elf in The Hobbit or a hostile blue alien in Guardians of the Galaxy, he played Ned, a man who baked pies and raised the dead. He helped a detective solve crimes and was in love with a girl he couldn’t touch or else he would kill her - that terrible dilemma led to some pretty cute kissing scenes that involved a lot of plastic wrap. It also starred Kristin Chenoweth, who ran around singing at the top of her lungs. The show looked a lot like Wes Anderson's films. Everything is so bright and colorful, even the morgue! It was visual candy!

2. Time Squad

Two Seasons, 2001-2003

This is probably untrue, but I first remember learning about the Boston Tea Party from this show, and it was a lot more entertaining than the version they teach you in school because this one had a robot in it. Buck Tuddrussel, a hapless time cop, and his sassy robot partner, Larry 3000 are tasked with the job of traveling back in time to correct history. They know nothing about history though, and I have no idea how they even got this job in the first place. They run into Otto Osworth, an orphan / huge history nerd, and together they try to save history, but not before they make everything worse.

3. Clone High

One Season, 2002-2003

This is one of the first “edgy adult” cartoons I remember watching. The show was a parody of typical high school dramas, and the high school was made up of clones of historical figures. Abraham Lincoln was the tall skater-like guy, JFK was the jock, Joan of Arc was the weird emo girl, Cleopatra was the pretty popular girl, and Mahatma Gandhi was the nerd. The show was axed when a group of people in India went on a hunger strike to protester how Gandhi was depicted. The show ends on one of the strangest cliff hangers ever.

4. Party Down

Two Seasons, 2009-2010

The show was about a catering team in LA made up of people who are just biding their time before they make it in Hollywood. The jokes were witty, and each episode showcased a different community within LA. This show never stood a chance. It was made up of one of the best casts (Jane Lynch, Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, Ken Marino) and as a result, some left for other jobs. I’m talking about you, Jane Lynch!

5. Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23

Two Seasons, 2012-2013

The show followed June, who’s just moved from Indiana to New York to follow her dream job on Wall Street, only to discover that her new boss has been arrested by the FBI and her company-owned dream apartment has been seized. She then moves in with Chloe, a New York “It Girl” who is trying to scam June for rent money. Chloe also has sex with June’s fiancé on June’s birthday cake. The best part of the show was that James Van Der Beek, formerly of Dawson’s Creek, played a fictionalized version of himself and shamelessly used his fame for whatever he wanted. This show recently popped up on my Netflix radar and is a perfect show to put on while you do the dishes or if you’re like me and need to watch something nice and fluffy while you eat.

6. Fruits Basket

One Season, 2001

When I was in high school, I spent the summer with a host family in Tokyo, and my younger host sisters introduced me and later got me addicted to several anime shows. The show followed a high school girl named Tohru, who has just lost her mother in a car accident. She is forced to move in with her grandfather and his unkind family, which doesn’t last long. She opts to pitch a tent outside instead, which happens to be on the property of the most popular boy in her school, Yuki Sohmas. Tohru agrees to move in with Yuki's family in exchange for acting as their housekeeper after her tent gets destroyed by a mudslide. But, wait! It gets weirder, which is the beauty of anime. It turns out, the Sohmas have a curse on them – they’re possessed by the spirits of the Chinese Zodiac and turn into their zodiac animals when they’re overwhelmed or touched by the opposite sex. The story continued in the manga book series, but it’s not the same!

7. Ouran High School Host Club

One Season, 2006

Yep, it’s another anime show. I told you my host sisters got me addicted! This story is similar to the show Boys Over Flowers, a ridiculously, cheesy, addicting K- drama that was about a poor girl attending a rich kid school and having to deal with a group of annoying rich guys who tease her because of her lower social class. Ouran High School Host Club, however, involved a lot more cross-dressing. The anime followed Haruhi, a high school girl who won a scholarship to attend Ouran Academy, a school for the super-wealthy. While looking for a place to study one day, she runs into the Host Club, a group of guys who gather after school to entertain their female clients – this sounds so super sketchy, but they basically just hosted tea parties and flirted a lot. The Host Club mistakes her as a male student, and after she accidentally breaks their expensive vase, they force her to work as their errand boy until she repays her debt to them.

8. Dead Like Me

Two Seasons, 2003-2004

Let me just say that I have a thing for the show creator Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, Hannibal). If his shows are anything to go by, he shares the weird curiosity I have with death, and he adds comedy to the mix. Georgia “George” gets flatted by a meteor and becomes a grim reaper, where her job is to try to remove people’s souls right before they’re about to die and lead them to the afterlife. We did get a movie out of this though, five years after the show went off the air.

9. Flight of the Conchords

Two Seasons, 2007-2009

The show was about The Flight of the Conchords, "New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo,” trying to make it in New York. Every episode featured amazing songs and surreal music videos. Everything about the show was so clever that I once laughed at a poster in the background of a scene for a full five minutes. The band’s manager, Murray, was also the Deputy Cultural Attache to the US from New Zealand. One of the New Zealand tourism posters in his office just reads, “New Zealand… Why not?” The band still tours, but it seems that there is no hope of the show returning.

10. Sports Night

Two Seasons, 1998-2000

The show was created by Aaron Sorkin, who also created West Wing and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. All of these shows are very similar with their themes, characters, actors, and the famous “walk and talk” technique. But, Sports Night seemed wittier than the other two shows. The show was about a fictional sports show on a fictional network, molded after ESPN. The show was character based and when the show ended it left a lot of loose ties. What happens with Dana and Casey!?
