I was in the shower when it hit me: NEW GIRL IS A MODERN RETELLING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ.
Think about it: Jess is living with someone who just doesn’t understand her and her bright, bubbly spirit. After a traumatic event, she finds herself in a new, magical world: The incredible loft that three random doofuses somehow afford. THIS IS OZ, PEOPLE.
Now for the characters. Jess is obvious. She’s Dorothy. She even looks like Dorothy! Cute and innocent and she wears gingham sometimes.
Nick is the Scarecrow. He’s smart in his way, but he certainly doesn’t project it. He’s trying to find his way to being a grown-ass man while staying true to his bartending, non-lawyering self. (Also, remember how Dorothy and the Scarecrow like clearly have a little bit of a thing for each other?)
Schmidt is the Tin Man. He’s a douchebag who needs to learn how to be a decent person. Successful, but he doesn’t know how to love. Plus, he’s constantly oiling up!
And that leaves Winston, our Cowardly Lion. He’s struggling to figure out his place in the America he left behind, now that he’s no longer a ball player and has to find the courage to find a new career. (This one is the stretch, but here we are.) Also, he has a cat.
Cece is trickier, but I think I’ve got it. Cece is Toto! She sticks with Dorothy as she travels from Kansas (life with Spencer) into Oz (the loft). She’s cute and she and the Tin Man seem to get along well. Plus, think about the names! Repetitive sounds? Check. Four letters? Check.
And the show is the story of them all finding what they need. Nick finds his brain by buying the bar and writing his novel. Schmidt finds his heart by falling in love with Cece. Winston finds his courage when he becomes a cop. And Jess learns that she’s been home all along! And I dunno, Cece keeps being cute and whatever.
And there is my grand theory of the New Girl/Wizard of Oz connection.
