T-Pain's innovative use of auto-tune may have changed the music industry forever, but it also ended up being the root of his depression.
The singer explained that many musicians didn't appreciate his musical methods, including his good friend Usher.
He says that there was a particular conversation with Usher back in 2013 that actually began a long spiral into depression.
"He was like, 'I want to tell you something, man.' He sounded real concerned. He was like, 'Man. You kinda fucked up music,'" T-Pain said in an upcoming episode of This Is Pop.
He added that he didn't understand what Usher meant and actually thought he was joking at first before realizing how serious he was.
"He was like, 'Yeah, man, you really fucked up music for real singers...look what you're doing.' I was like, 'What did I do? I came out, and I used auto-tune,'" he explained.
T-Pain continued, "He was like, 'Yeah, you fucked it up.' I'm like, ‘But I used it; I didn’t tell everybody else to start using it.'"
He went on to say that the conversation made him question much of his music and the impact he was making on the industry.
"That is the very moment, and I don’t even think I realized this for a long time, but that’s the very moment that started a four-year depression for me," T-Pain admitted.
Thankfully, it seems like T-Pain is doing better now, but he didn't reveal if Usher ever apologized for his comments.
