How 90s Kids Communicated With Their Friends Into The 2000's To Now

Us 90’s kids have lived through the evolution of technology that has changed the way we talk to friends. Here’s to blast from the past!

Before: The Home Phone.

Remember that? We actually used to call our friends on our land lines, not knowing what family member would pick up. You also had to share the phone with everyone in your house, which made it difficult when you wanted to talk to your friend ASAP.

Before: The flip phone.

This was the iPhone of the time, and any of your friends who had it were instantly 10x cooler.

Before: Walkie-talkies.

No interruptions and instant replies with walkie-talkies. Conversations went a little like this: “Sally, come in. Over.”-Lauren

“Lauren this is Sally, go ahead.”- Sally

Now: The iPhone.

You now have your own personal device to stay up to date on your friends 24/7 - you can even stalk their every move on Find My Friends.

Before: Instant Messenger.

Remember staying up late just to IM your best friends? So much happened on that platform, as it was the closest thing to texting we had.

Now: iMessage, texting, WhatsApp, Facebook messenger, you name it.

We have so many ways to be constantly communicating all the time, you don’t even have to choose just one way to do it either.

Before: Email.

You better forward this email to your 10 best friends or your crush will no longer like you and everything will go wrong. Your inbox was filled with chain messages.

Now: Email.

We actually use this for important stuff like emailing our professors and getting in contact with professionals.

Before: Actually walk or bike to your friend’s house.

Remember the days you would just walk on over to your friends if you needed to talk?

Now: FaceTime, Skype etc.

Instead of physically moving, we can have the same face to face interaction from the comfort of our own home.

Before: Pass notes in class.

"Hey girl, what are you doing after school today?"

Now: Text messaging in class.

There is no longer a need to sneak your bestie a not when you can just sneak in a few texts at your desk.

Before: Write letters.

Having a pen pal across the world, writing letters was the best way to keep in touch and mail is always fun to get!

Now: Social media and messaging.

It is a lot easier to keep in contact with friends around the world when they update their social media accounts constantly, but don’t you miss the hand written notes?

Before: Club Penguins.

The online penguin world allowed us to explore an imaginary world with old and new friends by our side. Too bad this world would become a lot smaller if your parents wouldn’t allow you to buy penguin coins.

Now: Why play one game online when we can play 100 different ones on our phones?
