People Are Freaking Out About A Sketch Called "The Real Housewives Of ISIS"

"It's only three days until the beheading. And I've got no idea what I'm gonna wear!"

There's a new sketch called "The Real Housewives of ISIS" in a BBC comedy show:

The sketch, which satirises the well-known American series about wealthy housewives in New York and Beverly Hills, aired for the first time this week on the BBC Two comedy show Revolting. It depicts four British ISIS jihadi brides in Syria.

The fictional characters talk about husbands, online chatrooms, and take selfies wearing suicide vests.

In one scene one of the woman is undecided about what to wear to a beheading.

While another woman during the two-minute clip shows off her suicide vest as her friends record it "for Instagram".

"She looked massive. You're gonna need a lot of Semtex to kill that one," an ISIS bride says.

Only for another friend to come out wearing exactly the same outfit.

The sketch also poked fun at the online grooming of "jihadi brides".

Since it was aired on Tuesday, the scene has been shared widely on social media.

Within two hours, it had been viewed 15 million times on the BBC Three Facebook page.

Yet some people were pretty unimpressed.

The BBC really made a satirical show called "The Real Housewives of ISIS" while the real housewives of ISIS are being raped and abused daily

People thought it made light of a serious problem.

So the BBC has aired a 'comedy' sketch in a show titled "Real Housewives of Isis". I need to make it clear that on… https://t.co/Zu506BptNT

Others tweeted that they were worried about the representation of Muslim women, who they said were already marginalised.

"It's about ISIS wives, not all Muslim women." Well that's great except we Muslim women already get called "ISIS whores" by strangers thx

The real housewives of Isis "comedy" that the BBC is going to air just isn't right. You can't make a joke out of it... Cause it's not funny

Ok... So I have just seen the promo of "The Real Housewives of ISIS" which will be shown on @BBCTwo I'm gobsmacked. (For once)

'Real Housewives of ISIS' will make Hijabis feel more isolated n targeted by Islamophobes. Thanks @BBC for adding to the negative stereotype

It was shared by right-wing bloggers including the editor of InfoWars, a website that pushes conspiracy theories.

Leftists are MAD that Muslim actresses made fun out of ISIS. Let that sink in. https://t.co/jYrS9tfQL3

While others said it was important to find "humour in such dark times" and praised the BBC for being "daring".

@BBC2 'The Real Housewives of Isis': Very funny! thank you for finding humour in such dark times and for being daring.U need to push limits

IMHO, I think it's pretty funny and it's something I'd actually watch. My views on offensive humour isn't anything new on here.

Talking about divided opinions over 'Real Housewives of ISIS' on @bbcasiannetwork, my opinion: its great! https://t.co/oyemyymysz

Sunny Hundal, editor of the blog Political Scrapbook, wrote in a Facebook post:

Why shouldn't the BBC be allowed to make fun of ISIS or their supporters? So what if it's offensive? That is the point of comedy sometimes, and it's about time we had more BBC stuff poking fun at Muslim/Sikh/Hindu communities. Not all of us are unable to laugh at ourselves.

The short clip ends with a preview of "next week", showing a character bursting into tears because her husband "won't stop talking about his 40 virgins".

A BBC spokesperson said it would not comment on this story other than to say that the broadcaster has a "rich history of satire".

Revolting is written by Jolyon Rubinstein and Heydon Prowse, who also wrote The Revolution Will Be Televised. The series is produced by Hat Trick Productions, best known for Have I Got News for You and Outnumbered.
