Carnival May Be Over, But Here Are Some Tips And Tricks To Help Prepare For Next Year!

After 2 long years of waiting, Carnival has finally returned to the island of Grenada! If you missed out this year, here are some ways to prepare for next year (especially if you are a tourist from America).

    1. Get your airline tickets early!

JetBlue and American Airlines are the only two airlines that travel from America to Grenada, and the airlines know that! Buy your tickets now, or face the inevitable price gouging.

    2. Join a Band!

Not a musical band. No talent required! A band is a group that you pay to party with. Depending on which band you join, they will give you your costume, unlimited drinks, access to parties, etc.

    3. Enjoy the Fetes!

All throughout Carnival week there will be fetes (parties). Get your tickets, show up, and have a great time.

    4. Bring clothes you don't mind trashing

Monday Morning J'Ouvert is a giant parade kicking off Carnival Season at midnight. Don't wear pretty clothes. There will be paint, motor oil, and baby powder thrown. Then, once you get to the beach, you get to rinse off your body in the ocean and are clean for the new season ahead.

    5. Enjoy Pretty Mas

Pretty Mas is where everyone wears feathers, and bikinis, and dresses in traditional wear. (Joining a band is great for this event). You get to parade around the city being blessed with baby powder, drinking, and dancing to traditional music.

    6. Sunscreen and Water are a must

You will be out in the sun all day drinking, and in very little clothes. Trust me when I say you will get burned if you don't protect yourself from the sun! Don't forget to reapply that sunscreen or drink water! If you are partying at night, you also may want to put some bug spray on your legs too.

    7. Island Time is Real

This is the exact opposite of NYC. Relax, take your time, and enjoy! There's no rush here.

    8. Bring Cash

In the majority of places, especially the resorts, they do accept credit card. But make sure you have some Eastern Caribbean Dollars on you just in case the card machines don't work, or if you need a taxi. You also need coins for the public busses, or if you want to buy something from a street vendor.

During Carnival, you'll see a lot of people outside selling stuff from their home bbqs, or selling necklaces on the beach.

    9. The Rum Punch will pack a punch!

You've been warned. It tastes amazing, but you will definitely not be able to walk straight after a glass. I've seen people with seasoned livers get plastered after two drinks.

    10. Keep Left

They drive on the Left side of the road. If you are from a country (like the US) where they drive on the right, everything is the opposite.

    11. Check out the Government's Website

The Government of Grenada has a whole corporation dedicated to Carnival. This year's activities may be over, but as you get closer to next August, check out this site for more information and events

    12. Embrace the Culture!

Don't be afraid to ask around to see where the parties are, or where the hot spots are. Go to the beach, try the local rum and chocolate, discover new foods like Oil Down, or experience the Scuba diving. If you're near the north of the island, check out the turtle watching. If you're near St. George's, check out the college life. Students from all over the world come to SGU for a great education, and you'll be sure to find something to do.
