The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Although this children's book first came out in 1969, it is one of the best-selling children's books of all time. This book was written and illustrated by Eric Carle and contains an adventure like no other. The pictures he created are illustrated so beautifully with bright and enticing colors. Also, the concept of dominance is really seen with some of the pictures on the page which really helps to capture the reader's eyes. Not only are the pictures beautiful, but the story being told is just as beautiful. The evolution of, at first, this little egg lying on a leaf, to later, transforming into a big beautiful butterfly is written and portrayed so well, and easy to understand. Also, this book is so different and unique because it contains cutouts in certain pages. These cutouts in the pages and the different flaps of food make reading this book so interactive and fun, as well as easy to count when one pokes each of the foods shown. There is reading, counting, and learning all packed into this one colorful, creative masterpiece. This children's book is recommended for ages 1-3 years old.

Want to know more about the story being told?

This children's book is about a little hungry caterpillar coming into this world wanting to find something to munch on. He eats through different kinds of fruit, but he is still hungry. Then, he eats through various sweets and not-so-healthy foods and ends up with a stomachache (a good lesson for all). Lastly, he eats through a leaf and becomes bigger, and decides it is time to build himself a cocoon. In the end, after his time in the cocoon, he pushes himself out and becomes a magnificent butterfly.
