Warning: there are mild spoilers for the first three books in the series. The Hidden Legacy world is glamorous yet perilous. Magic determines everything: wealth, social status, power, marriage, and bloodlines. Magic users are separated by their relative power rankings: Prime, Significant, Notable, Average, and Minor. In this world, magic is more than a fun party trick. Primes can set cities on fire, summon terrifying fantastical creatures from the arcane realm, or compel someone to reveal their deepest, darkest secrets. You're a fire mage! It's a dangerous skill to have - if you're not too careful, you might be caught up in a rogue plot to burn down half of Houston! But hey - just because someone else did it first doesn't mean you have to follow in their footsteps. I'd advise you to avoid the whole "Nero burning down Rome" tactic and take a more peaceful approach. Maybe use your skills to impress your friends by hosting a barbecue: you could save on electricity by firing up the grill directly and create a one-of-a-kind fireworks show for post-dinner entertainment. Protip: be very careful near gas stations.

Pyrokinesis

You're a water mage! This is a seriously cool elemental power - the world is 71% water and the human body is 60% water. Let's face it: you control the most valuable material on Earth. But more importantly, think of all the cool surf moves you could pull off! And if you ever need to "disappear" your arch-nemesis... well, let's just say that the bottom of the ocean is an extremely good storage space for hiding corpses. For harnessing the full potential of your strength, I'd advise you to move near the ocean or a lake. Being too far away from water can deplete your magic because you're constantly searching for a nearby source of water with your passive field. Protip: don't sign up for your university's annual spring break trip to the Sahara Desert.

Aquakinesis

You're an earth mage! As long as you stay on solid ground, you're always backed up with a weapon in case of any rival House kidnappings or assassination attempts. This magic isn't as flashy as some of the other elemental powers (we can't all spontaneously combust in flames to show off) but flashy tends to attract unsavory enemies. Better be quiet about your earth-shattering skills (literally: you can create earthquakes). Protip: encourage your kid to get a pet rock. It's a very important part of their magical development and way less work than having a dog.

Geokinesis

You're an air/wind mage! If people are terrified of you... well, they have reason to be. You don't exactly have the best PR ever since a Prime nearly decimated Houston with a tornado. But don't worry: the bad rep will die down eventually and you'll be back to raking in profits at your skydiving business in no time. Protip: build an underground shelter near your home. Your kids may accidentally unleash a tornado in anger when you ground them.

Aerokinesis

You’re a lightning mage! On one hand, it’s not really a skill that can be used for harmless fun; on the other hand, you can zap your mortal enemies whenever you feel like it. The pros really outweigh the cons here. If I were you, I’d stay away from tall metallic skyscrapers. Why invite trouble if you can help it? Unless, of course, your assassination target lives in the penthouse. In that case, full speed ahead! Protip: audition for Zeus in your Classics department play. You have that role in the bag!

Fulgurkinesis

You’re a telekinetic! If you think about it, this is really the most useful magic you could have. You don’t have to move from the couch to answer the doorbell; you can multitask by cooking and knitting at the same time; you can strangle your arch-nemesis with their cashmere scarf. Really, there are so many practical applications of telekinesis in your daily life. And in the event that you can destroy cities like Mad Rogan… good luck. You’re going to need it. Protip: if you happen to have a tactile ability (the ability to make others feel touched), put that on your online dating profile.

Telekinesis

You’re an animal mage! Do you feel like human relationships are too much work and that all you need is a friendly puppy or rabbit or lynx? Then being an animal mage is the right job for you! Animals are wonderful companions: racoons can babysit your pre-schooler, grizzly bears can snuggle with you on winter nights, and ferrets can help execute your brilliant heists. No matter what you ask of your animal companions, remember that the most important part of your relationship is to love and cherish them. They aren’t your servants but your best friends. Protip: put covers on your car seats. The jaguars will claw the leather seats when ornery.

Therionology

You’re a harmonizer! You can affect moods of an entire room just by changing the position of objects. It’s not a very violent talent in comparison to other magic, but your services will be in high demand for interior decorating, party planning, fashion designing, and flower arrangements. Maybe you’re disappointed that you don’t have a more terrifying power, but creating joy and aesthetic beauty is just as valuable as tearing down cities. It’s better for your survival rate that you don’t get entangled with the more dangerous magical citizens. Protip: decline your ex’s request that you plan their wedding. It will not end well.

Harmonizing

You’re a truth-seeker! You have an extremely rare form of magic, like Nevada Baylor from the Hidden Legacy series. This one’s a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, your little sisters can never lie to you about stealing your lipstick. On the other hand, you don’t always want to know the truth when you ask for opinions about your spontaneous (and very bad) haircut. “The truth hurts” is a saying for a reason. Still, it’s better to hide your talent or else law enforcement will come knocking at your door. Protip: don’t skip freshmen orientation ice-breakers. You’ll impress everyone with your dazzling ability to win “Two Truths and a Lie.”

Elenchus

You’re an animator! You can give life to inanimate objects like mannequins or monster trucks. It’s exactly as creepy as it sounds, but extremely useful if you need to wage war on another House. You’re kind of like a modern-day Geppetto or Pygmalion, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that your creations are sentient. Protip: in case your life plan doesn’t work out, it’s never too late to apply for a job on Sesame Street.

Animating

You’re an empath! It’s exactly what it sounds like: you can sense the emotions of others and manipulate their emotions to your advantage. While you can use this talent to hurt others, this gift has likely made you very emotionally-sensitive and careful. It might be tempting to block your gift sometimes if you’re scared of what other people think of you, so it’s important to surround yourself with people who love and support you. With them, you don’t have to worry about being barraged with negative emotion all the time. Protip: remember to schedule some alone time every once in a while. Being surrounded by other people's emotions can be exhausting!

Empathy

You’re a siren! No, not that kind of siren. You don’t have to live on a rocky island and sing out to enamored sailors so that they’ll shipwreck. Though, to be honest, the truth isn’t much better. If you can’t control your magic, then everyone will become obsessed with you _and_ have to love you. In one horror story, a nurse once tried to kidnap a newborn siren because she became so enamored of the infant. It’s a miserable kind of life, being terrified that someone will kidnap you and wondering if anyone will ever love you for you. But don’t give up hope: if someone _really_ loves you, they’ll become immune to your powers. Protip: don’t sing in the shower. There may be disastrous results if you’re not keeping a tight lid on your magic.

Siren

You’re a… monster! I’d offer you congratulations but I’m running away screaming right now. Here’s the hard truth: your life span is probably going to be very short because other people are very scared of you. But don’t give up hope! With a lot of training and anger management, you may be able to control your monstrous transformation and retain reason in your other form. Law enforcement still won’t like you, but are they seriously going to go against a hundred-foot monster? I rest my case. Protip: invest in extra-large nail filers. And math tutoring. You might need it one day.

Metamorphosis

You’re a plant mage! Depending on your specialty, you may have an affinity with fungi, fruit trees, or other forms of flora. The city may not be the best home for your talents. You’ll be a lot happier settling down in a _Walden_ -esque retreat next to vibrant forests. Protip: join the creative team of _Little Shop of Horrors_ on Broadway. Your contribution of Audrey II will be to die for (literally). You may as well start preparing your Tony Award speech now.

Herbamagos

You’re a pattern mage! Are you inhumanly good at solving puzzles and the Rubik’s cube? Do all your friends hate you because you always, always win at Boggle? Then you’re definitely a magister examplaria! Your talents extend to more than playing games, however. With your keen intellect and propensity for finding patterns, you’re especially suited to computer hacking and other logic-based applications. Protip: lose at Scrabble every once in a while. It’s nice to have some friends.

Magister Examplaria

You’re an oneiromancer! You can predict the future in your dreams. You’ve hit the jackpot: dream of a couple lottery numbers or smart investment opportunities, and you’re set for life. Still, don’t get too cocky about your safety. Just because you dream the future doesn’t mean you’ll foresee your assassin murdering you in your own house during a giant party (this is a hypothetical example and any similarities to real life are merely a coincidence). Ahem. Protip: don’t set any morning alarms. We all know how the annoying blare of an alarm can affect your dreams. In your case, that might literally be a matter of life and death.

Oneiromancy

You’re an illusion mage! Do you ever feel uncomfortable in your skin? Well, it doesn’t matter if you’re an illusion mage – just change your appearance at will and you can become whoever you want to be. You never have to worry about zits on school photography day ever again! Lying comes easily to you as deception is your strong suit. Protip: take some acting lessons. Just because you can change your appearance to anything doesn’t mean your impersonation skills are flawless.
