5 Ways Gay Marriage Will Strengthen America

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness will mean something again.

[1. America will return to its foundational values.]

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness
will mean something again.

You will live in a culture that says it values Equality
and actually does.

You will live in a culture that says it values Freedom
and actually does.

You will live in a culture that says it values Justice
and actually does.

[2. People who voted against gay marriage will be reintegrated back into America.]

The actions of those who deprived fellow citizens of their legal rights will be invalidated. Citizens who favored religious reasoning for voting about a secular legal issue abandoned their American duty to promote Justice, as did the citizens who launched the petitions to ballot the matter.

By promoting discriminatory laws, instead of Justice, they necessarily valorized discrimination, thereby blatantly flouting American core values, which is necessarily Anti-American.

[3. Citizenship.]

With equal marriage rights secured, lesbians, gays, and bisexuals will have no more barriers to full citizenship.*

*Certainly there are many more battles to fight, like youth, employment, and housing protection policies or rescinding adoption bans, but marriage equality would be a key victory in those struggles.

[4. The Rule of Secular Law, triumphant.]

We will once again live under the rule of almost* secular law. Remember that whole ‘move to America to avoid religious persecution’ thing? It’s still relevant.

*We cannot forget that the War on Women continues. We must simultaneously and vigorously support their rights, because the rights of women and women of color cannot be disentangled from LGBT rights and our goal of Equality, nor Equality from Freedom and Justice.

[5. The Economy.]

Political parties will be forced to deal with the economy, instead of spending their time distracting voters with a secular rights issue.

Less money to spend on equality means more money to spend on fun.

Gays will spend a lot on weddings. The florist bills alone!

Gays will be able to secure insurance for their spouses, placing one less burden on the state to cover the uninsured.

They’ll pay taxes together. Heck, they might even buy a car or two.
