"Call Me Maybe" Supercut Makes It Official…

oOo 11 months agoOkay I’ve changed my mind. Or refined it. What’s good about this is that it is the opposite of the internet we are and hate. Pop music is an easy target of hate and especially internet hate, so right away we’re taking a step away from that and risking the slings and arrows. Next, the song is about vulnerability and the desire to reach out, being almost naked. She barely has the confidence to go for it but does, but doesn’t quite have the self-confidence to do it without pre-apologizing. The title, Call Me Maybe, essentially says, “it would be great if you called me but I mean don’t if you don’t want to. I’m just saying think about it, possibly, maybe. It’s OK if you don’t.” She’s laying herself bare, unsure if she’s worthy, unsure how it will come out, but doing it anyway. Says she knows it’s crazy. She’s padding for potential rejection but has to go for it and does. Likewise all the people doing their own renditions in this supercut are baring themselves, naked, putting themselves out there for almost inevitable internet scorn, Rebecca Black style. Yet they’re having fun, going for it, celebrating the joy of a candy pop song, essentially dancing around in their underwear like we all do at home but don’t do or admit around others. We pretend to be cool when we walk out our door, not admitting singing into our hairbrushes and being unguarded and vulnerable. That’s who we really are and it’s fantastic. That’s why this succeeds. The video has fun friends in hoodies singing into bananas and having fun, earnest musicians doing their thing even way out of genre (Accordion girl you are the best! No wait, red ukelele girl! No wait ethereal dreads guy! No wait, metal guy! No wait, polished production piano guy! No wait, flute girl! No wait violin guy! No wait, drum guy! No wait, lisping white rapper!), nonmusicians earnestly giving it a shot anyway (go, bad karaoke guy!), awkward sweet teens solo camming (Nichole337 at 1:10 you are my favorite! You’re wonderful!), trannies unabashedly doing their thing, kids being unadulterated kids, dudes not worrying about being masculine/tough, gay and straight, numerous races, normals and freaks, stars being normal people, dance troupes doing their routines (jumping flash mob, you are my favorite among favorites!), grandmas and toddlers gettin’ down, regular people doing nothing but sing happily into the camera. Fantastic. I wish there was a music awards show coming up and Carly Rae was playing this on it and they flew all these regular people in and recreated it in a big stage number and let them all shine. It would be the best thing ever, normals as stars, stars as normals. No pretense, just joy. Everything about this is celebrating who we really are: normal, vulnerable people who want to be joyful and unguarded and have fun and be included. It’s the opposite of internet cool and hipster cool and nasty, superior internet comments and criticism. It transcends all of that and makes itself unassailable via mass, participatory joy. It’s a face-splitting smile from start to finish and we feel kinship with all of these people because they’re us. This is who we really are and who we shouldn’t be afraid to be. Go Carly Rae and go youtubers and go whoever edited this supercut. Fantastic!

Okay I can’t stop watching this now. If I had never seen the video and had only heard the song, it would be a fun enough pop ditty like plenty of others that come and go, but having all these people joining in makes it so much better. The original video is pretty fun too. She’s really likeable.
