Over 30,000 acres of dazzling white salt. This is the perfect place for photography, speed racing, or just staring in awe. You'll feel like you're on another planet here.
3. Befriend some sea lions at the Sea Lion Caves in Oregon.
Located on the Oregon Coast, the Sea Lion Caves are a connected system of sea caves and caverns — one of the largest in the world. You'll be able to observe tons of sea lions here, and if you're lucky, puffins or bald eagles.
4. Get spooky at the Salem Witch Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
Learn all about the Salem witch trials and the rich history of the old port town. Afterward, you can buy wands and other magical gifts. If you're a lit nerd, don't forget to check out the nearby House of Seven Gables.
5. Leave your mark at Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas.
It's been one of the greatest oddities in America since it was created by an art group in 1974. The Cadillacs are buried at an angle corresponding to the Great Pyramid of Giza. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own spray paint and add to the chaos!
6. Stop by the classic Ra66it Ranch off of Route 66 in Staunton, Illinois.
An homage to Texas's Cadillac Ranch, featuring Volkswagen Rabbits. The name also alludes to the historic Route 66, which the site is located along. Oh, and it also refers to the hordes of real rabbits who live on the ranch!
7. Have a sci-fi pit stop at Biosphere 2 in Tucson, Arizona.
Biosphere 2 looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi film. In reality, it's an Earth system research center affiliated with the University of Arizona. Many of Earth's biomes are recreated in the center's buildings, from a rainforest, to a savannah grassland, to an 850-square-meter ocean with coral reef.
8. Get corny at The Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Nearly all the decorations here are made of corn, and you'll learn more about corn than you ever knew you wanted to know. Local artists design new corn murals to decorate the exterior every year. A-maize-ing, right?
9. Get playful at Northlandz in Flemington, New Jersey.
It's a model railway layout, a doll museum, AND an art gallery. In addition to offering eight miles of incredible model railroad scenes, you'll also get to see 200 dolls from around the world, and a 2,000-pipe organ.
10. Check out an iconic roadside attraction in Prada Marfa, Texas.
Get a picture in front of the infamous fake Prada storefront in the West Texas desert. The sculpture was designed and installed by two artists in 2005 and features real Prada shoes and handbags inside.
11. Don't miss the elaborate mini city of the Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman, Alabama.
This bizarre and fascinating miniature city was built by a Benedictine monk over the course of 50 years using cement and junk. The mini city is composed of replicas of the world's most important religious structures.
12. Relive the World's Fair in Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York.
This lush public park in Queens was once host to two World's Fairs, one in 1939 and one in 1964. The park still contains remnants of the 1964 World's Fair, including the Unisphere (a 12-story-high stainless steel representation of Earth) and the New York State Pavilion.
13. Get creative at the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, Wisconsin.
The Ringing Brothers held their very first circus in Baraboo. Today, the city is host to an extensive historical circus museum full of artifacts and ephemera from the circus era. Nearby, you can also check out the International Clown Hall of Fame!
