What Was The First Thing You Ever Pirated?

Chances are if you have an internet connection you’ve probably used it to commit some kind of copyright infringement. And chances are also pretty good your first download was probably pretty embarrassing. So own up, what was the first thing you ever illegally downloaded? Bonus points for who used the oldest p2p network.

I know, right? Now tell your friends!

Yeahhhhh, my first illegal download was “Love Fool” by the Cardigans on Napster… Shortly after, I pirated the entire Thriller video, which took 2 weeks.

You kids today…no concept…  I don’t remember for certain anymore, but whatever it was, would have been a Commodore 64 program downloaded via 300 baud modem. A modem that was hand-dialed by the way, to a BBS, something 90% or more people would need to look up on Wikipedia and then have trouble grasping the concept anyway. :) (That’s not said snobbishly/sarcastically, just nostalgically.)  A 300 baud modem would be, even if you have a really crappy 1MB/s DSL connection (for which I’d pity you, as that’s about the equivalent today to a 300baud modem in 1982 when the cool kids had 1200 baud) somewhere around 3400 times slower than that DSL. More like 65,000 times slower than an “average” 20MB/s cablemodem…

Napster. I downloaded Shania Twain’s Come On Over album. It took like three days on dial-up, and I didn’t even have a CD burner, so I recorded it to cassette.

In 1997 I downloaded my first pirated song via an AOL warez chatroom. I think it was Beck or Bush. Some band that starts with a ‘B’. It took over an hour to download.  Did that for awhile, then around 2000 started using Napster sporadically and then started pirating most of my music when Kazaa-lite blew up, maybe 2002? Just goes to show how long it’s taken for record companies to evolve. People downloaded their shit years before iTunes and PB came along.

I think it was an unreleased Eminem song on LimeWire. I was in awe you could get music for free.

A friend gave us a burned copy of Worms 2 so we could play it on our home LAN.

For both my wife and I it was Blur: Song 2. I got mine off a website that had .wavs you could right click and save. Pre Napster stuff.

A little bit of LimeWire’s what I need,
A little bit of uTorrent’s what I see.

A little bit of Vuze’s all night long.
A little bit of Pirates Bay here I am,
A little bit of you makes me your man!

The first thing I even pirated was a yacht off the coast of Maryland. I wore an eye patch and was a little drunk at the time. The people on the boat laughed at me, so I went home and slept on the couch. So yea, I’m not that good at pirating I guess.

An mp3 of “Nelly - Country Grammar”.
      With Kazaa in 2000.

I think it was Monsters Inc: Scare Island for the PS1. I had flu or something for about two weeks and I didn’t have anything to do so my dad downloaded it for me. Parenting for the win.

    • I used to pirate RAC off of Napster when I was in my “rebel by being fake racist” phase as a teenager.

KazaA. I Do!! by Toya. Whatever; that song is still the shit. I remember because I had just bought that CD. For that song. I was understandably pissed when I got home and found I no longer had to engage in CD purchasing because my dad had KazaA. I WAS TOO LATE.
I also have an extensive history with LimeWire. Something about Morpheus as well.

It was on Limewire. *cringe* I actually downloaded several thousands of songs on Limewire and got caught… I was only 14 so the phone company/some lawyers had me sign a paper promising never to do it again. True story.
