I doubt she was a boy who wanted to get plastic surgery to be pretty and got a sex change…they are two different things. You can’t just “learn to love the body you are in” if you are trapped in the body of the wrong gender.

Shanna B. 4 months agoMeanwhile…we criticize celebrities who get plastic surgery because they want to look like something they’re not. This is no different and should not be encouraged, just like we don’t encourage people to her plastic surgery. Instead, we should encourage people to accept and love themselves the way they are.

So someone with a cleft palate or severe burn scars should just learn to love themselves the way they are? Does it not count to you because it’s a mental issue and you don’t believe those with mental health issues need whatever assistance they require to become a happy, healthy individual? Are you the sort of person who tells people with severe clinical depression (like myself) that all they need to do is “cheer up”, when those same people only barely keep from killing themselves thanks to medication and therapy? Because you are not encouraging her to accept and love herself the way she is. You are encouraging her to ignore the fact that she was born in the wrong body — in essence, that she has a treatable birth defect that can seriously affect her mental state to the point of suicide- all because it makes YOU uncomfortable. In less gentle words, Shanna — go screw yourself quietly with a sandpaper glove.

Such kindness radiated here. Oh wait, that’s right, you people are only nice to those who agree 100% with your views rather than listening and respecting varying opinions. Great job making sweeping generalizations about me, by the way. Your analogy about depression and suicide doesn’t work one bit and here’s why: in the case of depression, we don’t encourage the person to give in to what they WANT, we do our best, yes, encourage them to learn to love themselves the way they are. If medication or therapy is necessary, then by all means, they should seek it. Similar situation here. This is a mental illness and should be treated as such.

Snarfs 4 months agoAnd what if this person was not attractive before or after? It just kind of seems more sympathy is always given to people who are physically attractive. I’ve known plenty of men who felt they were women and yearned for a sexual reassignment surgery. Unfortunately, there was a lot less support when they were very heavy or less attractive. That’s the real change we need to be making. Support people for what they need regardless of if they are pretty to look at or not. Just say’n.

corys2 4 months agoBeautiful :) I’m happy for this girl and her transition :D But we (my fellow cis people) gotta be careful of glorifying it to the point that it becomes ‘ideal.’ Because there are so many trans* people who don’t have the resources to make this kind of transition and society gives them shit for not being able to pass off. Some of the reaction to stories like this sometimes seem like people are going “bravo! we can’t tell your trans!”
