Developers Who Tore Down A Historic Pub Will Be Ordered To Rebuild It Brick By Brick

    "People before profits."

The developers who tore down the Carlton Tavern pub in Maida Vale, London, to replace it with flats earlier this month are set to be ordered by the council to rebuild it brick by brick.

Despite opposition from local residents, the owner of the pub, Tel Aviv-based development firm CLTX Ltd, recently bulldozed the historic building.

Westminster council, which had arranged the pub to be listed as non-designated heritage asset and therefore protected, has now ordered the company to "recreate in facsimile the building as it stood immediately prior to its demolition".

John Walker, director of planning at the council, said the notice that will stop the developers from selling the land until the building is rebuilt is due to be delivered next Tuesday.

Walker told BuzzFeed News: "There is a paper going to the planning committee next week. Obviously, we cannot pre-empt any decision, but this shows how important the issue is to local residents and the council, and officers have worked hard to bring this to the committee as quickly as possible."

Councillor Robert Davis, deputy leader of Westminster city council, described the demolition of the pub as "scandalous" and that "the book should be thrown" at the developers.
