The New Canadian Government Is Shaking Up The Way Senators Are Appointed

The government is creating a new independent advisory board to pick senators.

The Liberals have unveiled their plan to reform the Senate. Minister of Democratic Institutions Maryam Monsef said they'll create an independent board to find "amazing Canadians of great merit" to recommend to the prime minister.

The new advisory board will recommend five names for each Senate seat that needs to be filled. The shortlist will not be publicized, but the prime minister will have to choose from one of those five names.

The Liberals also turfed Conservative Senate Speaker Leo Housakos and replaced him with George Furey, a Senate Liberal appointed by Jean Chrétien.
