What Is Pacifier Teeth?

Oftentimes, we worry a little too much about our loved ones, family members, friends, spouses, and even colleagues. For the most part, we have reason to worry, but these people can take care of themselves and don’t usually need your help.

But when it comes to our children (especially when they’re infants), well . . . We’re always going to worry no matter what. But usually we have direct control over the things our young children do and don’t do. The problem is, sometimes it’s hard to teach a certain behavior or break a bad habit.

One habit that’s worth breaking after they hit a certain age is thumb and pacifier sucking.

The thing is, thumb sucking is actually a natural reflex for infants. This actually begins in the womb, so the fact that young children still put their thumb or something else in their mouth is completely normal, since it makes them feel protected and happy (because it reminds them of a secure place like the womb).

And at times, when children are experiencing difficult times, it makes sense that they would reactively suck a thumb or finger. It relaxes them and can even help them fall asleep. Thus, you’ll see them suck their thumb sometimes when they’re tired.

The problem is when the thumb sucking becomes prolonged. It can cause the mouth to grow improperly and even affect the alignment of their teeth. The roof of the mouth may also become affected, causing it to be misshapen.

One thing to consider, however, is how your child sucks their thumb. If it’s relaxed and mostly just “in” their mouth, well, that won’t cause much harm whatsoever. But if they vigorously suck on their thumb, they may experience more difficulty with their teeth and mouth’s growth.

Ultimately, just know that up until your child is 4 years old, it’s okay for them to pop a thumb in their mouth and lightly suck on it. Just be attentive to how much they do it and how hard they’re sucking on their thumb, as those are the only things to worry about. And if thumb sucking continues after age 4, you can offer praise when they don’t suck their thumb rather than scold them for doing so. You can reward them with other things and even ask your dentist to explain to them why they shouldn’t.

If it continues, placing something over the thumb or even having your dentist prescribe a device to put in the mouth to help with thumb sucking may be your last resort.
