6 Things We Learned From Lil Wayne's Rolling Stone Interview

The embattled rap superstar broke his silence on his feud with Cash Money, the status of his new album(s), and learning what "On Fleek" means.

After stunning the hip-hop world with a series of tweets last December in which he called himself a "prisoner" of Cash Money records, Lil Wayne raised further eyebrows with a reported $51 million lawsuit aimed at extricating himself, and his YMCMB imprint, from his long-term label home. In a new interview published today in Rolling Stone, Wayne addressed the rift and what it means for his music career. Here's what we learned.

1. The suit against Birdman and Cash Money is very real and very personal.

While he didn't discuss the details of the bombshell lawsuit, calling it simply "a legal matter," Lil Wayne said he and Birdman — who has been his father figure and label boss since he was just 12 years old — are no longer on speaking terms. "I have no words," Wayne told Rolling Stone. "I'm super-numb to it, to tell you the truth."

2. Tha Carter V still isn't scheduled to be released anytime soon.

Though Wayne says the long-awaited album is "super-done," Cash Money has shelved it indefinitely. "I would have released it yesterday if I could," he says. "But it's a dead subject right now. It's a jewel in the safe."

3. When he gets down about things, he turns to weed to raise his spirits.

Reported to have given up on alcohol and promethazine after health scares, Wayne uses weed as his pick-me-up of choice. "I'm human," he says of the emotional toll of his fallout with Cash Money. "But it's nothing that a good blunt can't cure."

4. He plans to release the non-Carter V album Free Weezy in March — for free.

Wayne says he's been biding his time while waiting for the release of The Carter V by working on even more music, which he promises won't disappoint. "I'm working on it every day, man," he says of the previously announced Free Weezy album. "I guarantee it's going to be something dope. If you don't want a musician being creative, don't get the Free Weezy album."

5. He loves Rae Sremmurd and Migos.

Wayne cited the two rising Atlanta groups as being among his favorite young hip-hop artists.

6. He doesn't know what "on fleek" means, either.

In probably the interview's funniest moment, Wayne admits that he's gotten to the age where he has to rely on his 16-year-old daughter to keep up with slang. "Sometimes I don't know what the hell they're talking about on Instagram," he said. "I had to call her, like, 'What the hell is 'on fleek'?'"
