6 Hip-Hop Songs That Defined Vine In 2014

One thing we know to be true at the end of 2014: Addictive, looping videos are pretty much always better with a hip-hop soundtrack. As Vine came into its own this year, it helped bring a slew of previously obscure rap songs to the popular consciousness on a massive scale, further challenging conventional wisdom on what constitutes a "hit." For rappers whose tracks flourished on the social network, record deals and a chance at genuine stardom were a definite possibility.

What exactly makes these songs go viral? Of course it's impossible to say definitively. But short, memorable lyric fragments and dramatic production (gotta make the most of those six seconds, after all) are a consistent theme. As are fun and easy dances, which can encourage members of the Vine community to put their own spin on things and provide social momentum.

O.T. Genasis, "CoCo"

Though O.T. Genasis' "CoCo" is an ode to cocaine, Vine users took the lyrics in a more food-oriented direction.

Bobby Shmurda, "Hot Boy"

Bobby Shmurda's debut music video spawned two different Vine trends: well-placed references to "a week ago," and imitations of his signature Shmoney dance.

OG Maco, "U Guessed It"

iLoveMakonnen, "Tuesday"

The easygoing '80s vibe of iLoveMakonnen's "Tuesday" led to some of the corniest dancing ever seen on Vine. Anyone who's clubbing on a Tuesday is probably dancing like these Viners.

Rich Gang, "Lifestyle"

The comedy in the Vines incorporating Rich Gang's "Lifestyle" play on the listener's inability to figure out what the hell Young Thug is saying. (Pro-tip: It's obvious after the third listen.)

Riff Raff, "Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz"

Riff Raff's oddly spelled single has inspired a number of humorous tiptoeing Vines from teens, the elderly, and house pets alike.
