I don’t know if I believe that mate preference is hard wired, but I think this study doesn’t disprove it. It could simply mean in more equal cultures men and women are more likely to want to appear to be open minded. In other words they might still want an older husband or a younger wife, but because of their country’s value system they wouldn’t want to admit it.
