I can see how citing tweets would be useful in illustrating trolling practices, viral pop-culture, and public opinion (via hashtags). I doubt people are citing these as ‘scholarly resources’, but rather using them as a tool to measure societal interaction. Think of them as primary sources instead of secondary and you begin to see their worth.
