The Evolution Of Riot Gear

The New York Times made this interesting little graphic showing how riot gear has changed over the years. According to them, “During the 1960s and ’70s, police officers treated many protests as a threat to the social order and responded with brute force. In the 1980s and ’90s, demonstrations tended to be less confrontational and the police responded with more accommodating tactics.”

I know, right? Now tell your friends!

…and the million man march was organized… the organizers weren’t destructive… the goal was to send a message, not shut down a city, not disrupt other citizens lives. Any street blockages or difficulties caused to local businesses were incidental, not an intentional act. So… now OWS was there to protest police response??? It’s odd how “the message” keeps changing.  One of the biggest problems with OWS is that it started with some statistics. The statistics are accurate. But then a SMALL group of people had the audacity to declare themselves the voice of the majority. They promoted themselves to the position of “the peoples” proxy. But the true majority looked at the group and said “wow, I wouldn’t hire that person. I wouldn’t want that person to teach my children. It would suck to have that person as my neighbor, they look trashy. Man, it would suck if that person was my co-worker, the days would be long because that person is annoying.” And OWS then went and acted in ways that the true majority would never act. What occurred is that the true majority looked at the original statistics and “Yeah… that’s messed up… but those OWS street people… no… I can’t relate to them. I work for a living. I’m not a pot-head. I have a family. I like my country, and I’d like to fix it’s problems but I don’t want to disrupt and destroy my country. I have better things to do with my life than instigate confrontations with the police so I can try to fabricate claims of systemic injustice” What happens when a person gets elected to public office, a true proxy of the people, and then that person embarrasses the people they represent? …the true majority turns on them. They don’t get re-elected. OWS self appointed themselves as the peoples representative and then thumbed their nose at what the true majority believes, acts like, and holds in their hearts and minds as important. So although the majority can look at the statistics and agree there’s a problem, beyond a small flurry of initial support (for the statistics), the masses were quickly disenfranchised with OWS because of the way OWS conducted themselves. So the little bit of initial support (based solely upon the statistical principal) quickly shriveled up and died. Yeah, I know… OWS resents “Middle America.” It shows. It was readily apparent to all those “Bumpkins”, “Hillbillys” and “Small Town Dopes” too. But here’s the kicker folks. Those “small town dopes”… are the true majority. New York is BIG… but compared to the whole of the rest of the country, it’s small. Throw LA in the same boat. And OWS never made itself sympathetic to Middle America. Heck, from what I saw… most New Yorkers couldn’t stand you either. (Probably because you weren’t just presenting a message, you were disrupting their lives.) Flame all you want. The proof is in the pudding. The movement fizzled out… Because it was divisive, not inclusive. It was disorganized. It did not have a clear message. It was half-baked and spontaneous. And bullshit games, destructive behavior, and INSTIGATED clashes with the police won’t win you any favor with the masses. So, pull back. Pull your head out of your asses. Regroup. Get rid of the “anti-american” people that have infiltrated your cause (commmunists, socialists and anarchists). Grow up a little and lose some of your youthful exuberance that clouds logical thought. Clearly define your message and present it in a way that doesn’t make the true majority feel that you want to destroy their lives. (Putting on my flame retardant clothing… because I know it’s inevitable)
