  • The emotional displays don't need to be authentic, they just have to demonstrate a lot of effort. “Flattery inflation” benefits a dictator by distorting normal signals of higher and lower levels of support. It stifles information about exactly how unpopular the dictator is.  The regime is full of fake signals and everyone knows it. So “costly signaling” is important. If I have to expend resources to signal a position, it becomes more believable. Thus, it is not enough to merely say you support the leader.

  • I don't completely dismiss the possibility that these people are grieving. With all of the different psychological and sociological states people can be in I think that they might actually be feeling a great emptiness that they lost the 'Dear Leader'. I've heard that many North Koreans don't even know about the outside world so it's not like they know that he was a megalomaniac that kept them starving under his boot. or they could just be freaked the fuck out and not want to get shot.
