I feel that it's apparent that Lady Gaga took the song 'Express yourself' and simply re-synthesized it and rewrote similar lyrics. I hate Lady Gaga, and I always have but I can understand that a lot of songs out there can inspire you to set different lyrics to the beat. I just hope that Madonna is being paid royalties for this, and if Madonna is okay with not being paid royalties, then I guess it doesn't truly matter. I don't think this song deserves all of the praise it's being given however. Sure Lady Gaga wrote the lyrics, but Madonna did everything else.

i'll be honest, i immediately heard the similiarity when i first heard Lady Gaga's new song, but that's cuz i used to listen to Madonna as a kid, especially Express Yourself. there's nothing wrong with it being similar. She even said she looks up to Madonna, so its not like she's doing it to piss people off or doing it in a secretive way. She puts it out there. For crying out loud, they even look and sound alike, not to mention their music. Maybe Gaga is the new Madonna? They're both unique, they both have unique names, they're both blonde, and wear unique clothes. Nothing wrong with it. And also, who cares if ANYONE copies off of anyone anymore? It's gonna make money regardless so its watever with me. They're both catchy songs apparently if people immediately notice it.

I don't care if she sang the Madonna songbook verbatim. I love old school Madonna and I love Gaga. Both of them piss off the exact people that I most like to see pissed off.

I like some of her music.
But this is for people not to keep saying that
she's completely original and others copy Gaga.

It's pop. Certain chord progressions set out in an easily listenable format somehow appeals to a lot of people and it's a formula that has worked for quite a while. WHODATHUNKIT? Personally, I take more issue with the fact that she refers to Asians as “Orients”.
I doubt she's using it pejoratively, but it's anachronistic at best, and ignorant at worst. (Oh, and, no, I don't like the idea of fixed identity, which is pretty much what BTW is celebrating.)

Ugh. First she copies Ace of Bass, and now this.  It just makes me want to listen to Madonna.

Anyone who listens to “Born This Way” and doesn't immediately think “That sounds like a poor man's Express Yourself” has no business talking about music. BTW is completely singlewhitefemaling Express Yourself.

Yeah, its right on the edge of sounding like a rip-off.  that other song of hers “Alejandro” or whatever WAS a dead-on rip-off of that old Ace of Base song. No fucking doubt about it.  Regardless, both songs are commercial garbage. Pure junk and drivel. Which is puzzling because I've seen early footage of her singing some of her original songs and playing piano and they're really good.
No idea why she's churning out this garbage.

I love Madonna and I love Gaga, I hate that the internet is apparently making me choose a side. :( They do sound kind of similar, especially when you kind of rearrange it so it overlaps like this, but what's the point? They're both incredible and iconic songs (which is saying something considering BTW has been out for a grand total of 36 hours), let's just listen to them both and dance like crazy. BTW isn't even a direct copy of EY, obviously, and they both stand on their own. Not to mention that they have somewhat different messages (they both want you to love yourself, but Gaga says because of your differences, whereas Madge says you deserve more than a crap boyfriend).  I honestly don't think Gaga would even intentionally copy Madonna anyway, especially when she's trying to establish herself as more than just “the next Madonna,” even though that's certainly an apt title. Besides, and not to sound like Sarah Palin, but the mainstream media have been comparing Gaga to Madonna from the start. The best prior example iss when everyone was calling Alejandro the next La Isla Bonita, despite that they sound almost nothing alike aside from the spanish themes. The fact that this is one of the most anticipated and hyped single releases in history is more than enough motive to try and take away from what Gaga created, too.  I can't help but wonder what Madonna herself thinks of all this. Something tells me she doesn't really care, although her official Youtube account uploaded her 1989 VMA performance of Express Yourself just today, presumably because the comparisons won't end. That's odd at best and passive aggressive at worst, but then again, who knows how much control she has over said account. If nothing else, Gaga will have the last laugh: Born This Way is breaking records left and right, and Billboard is predicting it will debut at the top of the Hot 100, and be the 1000th Hot 100 chart-topper in its history.

Lady Gaga is just a rich spoiled brat playing music star with daddy's help. Fuck her and her phony ass. And shame on the mos for being such easy tools.

thanks to whoever mashed this. I was trying to figure out which madonna song I was reminded of. I thought it was vogue but this is the correct one.

Granted If Madonna hadn't broken those stereotypes it would have been harder for people like Gaga. At the same time, shes breaking some herself and will make it easier for the next generation of rule breakers.
She has already stated that she looked up to Madonna as an inspiration and imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery.

I like this version better.
