Shot in 1996 and edited in 2000, this is a short documentary about a group of 13-year-old riot grrrls who were socially ostracized at school by their peers and upperclassmen. Everyone in the schoolyard held strong opinions about these so-called “dirty girls,” and meanwhile the “dirty girls” themselves aimed to get their message across by distributing their zine across campus. Directed by Michael Lucid. Music: “Batmobile” by Liz Phair.

donnaw8 2 months agoIf you loudly proclaim you aren’t like THOSE PEOPLE, how they all look the same and act the same, and you are friends with a group of people who all look the same and act the same, I have terrible news for you. You are exactly like those people. And there is nothing wrong with it. Everyone is just copying in some way someone or something else, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t being true to yourself. It is just as ignorant to bash others for being “preppy” as it is for them to bash you.

hellbounda 2 months agoLOL, a “bit” radical. Not that radical wasn’t the title of a hundred songs by Riot Grrrl bands. I feel, as a former original, that I need to correct something. Riot Grrl wasn’t exactly what everyone is defining it as. It was an educational movement focusing on teaching women how to set up audio and recording equipment for their own punk bands. It sort of took off on its own from there.
