So close! Dempsey with a header just over the bar.

With this goal, Ronaldo and Portugal may have sent the U.S. through to the knockout round.

GROUP G UPDATE: Cristiano Ronaldo scores for Portugal, up 2-1. That is GREAT for the U.S. If these results hold, the U.S. and Germany advance.

Ouch! USA’s Bedoya and Jones collide and knock heads. Both guys down.

Ouch, Clint Dempsey takes a shoulder to the face. He’s playing with a broken nose. That hurts.

If the results in Group G stand, with Portugal 1-1 Ghana and Germany 1-0 USA, the U.S. and Germany would advance.

Goal by Germany. 1-0.

Germany is sending a lot of guys forward early in the second half. The Germans don’t appear content to play for the tie.

Great defending again by Omar Gonzalez. He’s doing everything for the U.S. on defense today.

Second half starts now in Recife. USA 0-0 Germany.

In the other Group G match, Portugal goes up 1-0 on Ghana with this own goal. A very good thing for the U.S. If the results hold, the U.S. and Germany would both advance.

OMAR! Omar Gonzalez with a couple brilliant challenges early on. He’s a big reason Germany doesn’t have an early goal. Still 0-0.

HUGE save by Tim Howard for the U.S. Germany is pressuring and it is working. Couple decent chances already. U.S. need to find a way to keep possession.

Germany dominating possession early on. The U.S. can’t seem to advance the ball out of their end.

Here. We. GO.

Here are the standings in the group going into Thursday’s match. Ghana and Portugal also face-off today. A USA-Germany tie will ensure that both teams advance. A win for either sends the victor on to the knockout round as well.

Torrential downpours and flooding in Recife today had many wondering if USA vs. Germany would happen as planned. FIFA says the match will happen as scheduled.
