The 10 Best Actor Transformations

In “Looper,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt transmogrifies into his older self, played by Bruce Willis (that’s movie magic for you). Here are ten other actors who managed to surprise us onscreen with a totally different (and sometimes totally freaky!) new look. Be sure to check out JGL’s transformation into Bruce Willis in theaters on September 28.

1. Charlize Theron

The South African beauty packed on the weight and prosthetics to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in “Monster.”

2. Andy Serkis

Serkis is the king of motion capture, which makes his critters like Caesar in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and good old Gollum especially eerie.

3. Brad Pitt

Will Pitt look like Benjamin Button when he gets older? We sure hope not.

4. John Hurt

Way before he played Dumbledore, John Hurt piled on the pancake make-up to play John Merrick in “The Elephant Man.”

5. Doug Jones

If there’s a freaky creature afoot, you can probably bet that it’s Doug Jones underneath all that makeup. Here is he in “Pan’s Labyrinth” as the Faun.

6. Ron Perlman

Ron Perlman is no stranger to this biz — remember him as the Beast in “Beauty in the Beast”? — but his kitten-loving Hellboy is probably his most memorable transformation to date.

7. Tom Hardy

Before he pumped it up for “Warrior” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” Tom Hardy rocked this incredibly bizarre look for “Star Trek: Nemesis.”

8. Eric Bana

Bana bulked up and donned some fabulous jailhouse tattoos and a gold front to play the infamous Australian criminal Mark Read in the biopic “Chopper.”

9. Christian Bale

When is Christian Bale not turning himself into some emaciated weirdo or another? Here he is as former boxer Dicky Ecklund in “The Fighter.” At least he got an Oscar out of it, right?

10. Robert De Niro

Before he met the Fockers, Robert De Niro was a contender in “Raging Bull.”

11. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

One part JGL, one part Bruce Willis. All parts freaking me out right now.
