Professional Boxing Has Its First Openly Gay Man
Orlando Cruz, a Puerto Rican featherweight, could also have a shot at a title soon.
Add boxing to the growing list of sports with openly gay stars. Orlando Cruz, a former Olympian and current #4 WBO featherweight, just revealed that he’s gay, saying, “I’ve been fighting for more than 24 years and as I continue my ascendant career, I want to be true to myself.”
Cruz, 31, could have a shot at a major title soon, too, potentially positioning him to be a major figure in the ongoing discussion of LGBT presence in pro sports.

boweryboy 7 months ago@fadlee: You’re making massive generalizations of both heterosexuals and homosexuals, although you make a valid point regarding the fluid dynamics within our minds. That dynamic isn’t mutually exclusive to a heterosexual’s view of the opposite sex. It applies to a homosexual’s view of the same sex as well… so how can that be an issue? If you actually watched a gay pride parade – and I mean watch as in attending and sitting through the whole thing – you will find that there are more average Joes and Janes marching in the parade than drag queens, party bois and half naked people. The individuals you consider “obscene” are what anti-gay movements – and yourself – tend to focus on to further whatever agenda that is being pushed. Those individuals make up a tiny percentage of the gay community yet they’re the most visible percentage. The average gay man or woman is no different than you. There’s nothing wrong with showing a little pride in who you are. Otherwise you would have to consider St. Patrick Day parades and Black History parades equally tasteless. At one point in history Irish and Blacks were treated with the same disdain as gays. Just saying… Also, I’m assuming that you know “all gays” – minus myself, of course – to blatantly present as fact that “all gays” are “biased…(and) hypocritical … especially in regards to an actual gay person who decided to be straight” I can’t speak for any other gay person (and neither can you because you’re not gay) , but I personally have no issue with any gay individual who wants to turn straight as long as they’re doing it of their own accord. What I do take issue with is when any gay individual is coerced in any way, shape, or form into becoming straight. Especially if it is done for the good of those who are uncomfortable with that individual’s sexuality. I’ve exhausted all I have to say, but I will leave you with this: I would highly suggest that before you continue with your gross generalizations of a group of people you clearly know nothing about go out, make some gay friends, and simply try to understand. You don’t have to accept or approve or fear or judge their sexuality. Just treat them with the respect that every human being deserves regardless of their age, race, gender, or sexual preference. You’ll be surprised at how many incredibly awesome, talented, genuine, and caring people you’re missing out on getting to know. Because at the end of the day, we’re all just people.

fadlee 7 months ago@ boweryboy: it wasn’t even double standard, both gender has this fluid fantasy or fetishes in whatever the opposite sex would do that look erotic.. its the fluid dynamics within our mind.. how can that be an issue? its tasteless to the fact that you need to parade yourself every year to show how obscene you are.. the biased nature and hypocrisy of all gays especially in regards to an actual gay person who decided to be straight than a straight person going gay, why the double standard? Its a sin to be straight? why do all gays get so worked up against any remedy or treatment to be straight? all i’m saying was, that there should at least be an option for them, not all gays wants to be gay.

boweryboy 7 months ago@fadlee: I respect anyone’s right to disagree with homosexuality. What I don’t respect is when someone tells me that who I am to the very core of my being is “unnatural”, a “disorder” or a “perversion”. Then in the same heterosexual breath they say that the “perversion” of two women going at it is hot. Double standard anyone? I won’t go into the comparisons of homosexuality to bestiality and necrophilia because people tend to trot out those tired comparisons when they don’t have anything to back up why they’re so opposed to homosexuality. Besides, my sexuality makes up a minuscule part of who I am. I define my sexuality. It does not define me. I still can’t understand why people get so worked up over two men or women having sex, and so far no against it can tell me why they get so worked up over it. Not even you.

fadlee 7 months ago@ boweryboy: i respect that you are a homosexual, sure, you can compare hetero to all that and i won’t be offended by it. Its part of human nature right, to have the desires to do such a thing like necrophilia, bestiality, pedophilia and what not.. so i guess why do we put a stop to that? homosexual isn’t natural anyway.. its a perversion or sort of disorder, only people find it a normal thing. (sure no big deal) if you think its part of human nature then i guess what difference does it make to others who were into pedophilia and bestiality? it doesn’t affect you too.. what funny is, psychologist find homosexuality untreatable thus made it as part of human nature? yeah, so natural that you can’t replicate your genes, outstanding evolution! p/s: yes, all straight men find two girls making out as hot as much as all straight women find two men going at it too!

boweryboy 7 months ago@ fadee: Homosexuality is no more a “sexual perversion” than heterosexuality. As someone who I’m assuming is a heterosexual male you are in no position to say anything about what it’s like to be gay because you’re not gay. Conversely I can’t speak to what it’s like being heterosexual because I’m not. Dragging out the tired trope of comparing homosexuality to bestiality, necrophilia and such is just that - tired. There’s no comparison (otherwise I could rightfully compare heterosexuality to those things as well). It doesn’t prove a point. And it shows you really have nothing to say except you hate “homos” for whatever reason your small mind is telling you. I’m sure you’re one of those “dudes” who thinks two girls going at it isn’t gay but hot. Two guys on the other hand… What I would like to know is how does the mere existence of gay men and women directly impact you or the quality of your life? Also, you’re an ass.

majorh 7 months agoemile griffith, a great fighter back in the 50’s and 60’s, while not out, was widely known to be bisexual. in fact, this led to a horrendous incident on 24 mar 62. griffth was fighting benny paret, who bad mouthed anti gay slurs before the fight. this drove griffith into a rage. close fight with paret knocking griffith down in the 6th. griffith survived. 12th round, griffith had paret literally out on the ropes and the ref didn’t see him for crucial moments. griffith put everything he had into his punches. paret never woke from the beating and died ten days later. this was on gillette’s friday night fights by the way. griffith came fully in may of 2008. honestly, i do not care if two CONSENTING adults do behind closed doors. i don’t want the government in bedroom or yours. best of luck to this fighter!
