Separate And Unequal: 7 Ways Israeli Democracy Stops At The Green Line

For years, the US State Department’s annual human rights reports have perfectly illustrated what too many in the pro-Israel community still deny: Israel’s vibrant democracy--heralded as one-of-a-kind in the Middle East--disappears at the Green Line. Chronicled in separate sections on Israel and “The Occupied Territories,” this year’s report painstakingly highlights the differences between Israel’s multi-party parliamentary democracy, and the occupied West Bank, where Palestinian residents live under Israeli military law. The report is further evidence that the occupation is incompatible with Israel’s democratic principles. When we erase the Green Line from maps of Israel, we erase the occupation from our consciousness, and make it that much more difficult to end it through a two-state solution. From freedom of speech to a right to a fair trial, check out the top reasons why Israel’s democracy requires us to remember the Green Line. (Excerpted from the US Department of State’s Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2014)
