Adidas’ New Shoes Seem Pretty Racist
They have shackles. Shackles!
The new sneakers from Adidas and designer Jeremy Scott have caused some controversy lately, because… Well because they have ankle shackles. The shoes, titled Jeremy Scott x adidas Roundhouse Mid “Handcuffs,” were previewed in January, but they didn’t cause much of a stir until this past week when Adidas’ Facebook page released a preview image with the quote “Got a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles?” That post has thousands of shares and comments featuring people arguing whether or not the shoes are racist.

So sad that even the rants about this not being racist are largely racist rants painting a broad, generalized picture of black people as all having a victim mentality. First off, Adidas had to know some of their customers were going to hate this because of the shackles. They should also know other people would hate them because they’re fugly. I bet the one thing they did predict was that people expressing opinions on this, no matter what the protestation, would also act pretty fugly about their position.

Really? Because they have chains, that makes them racist? Do you guys sincerely believe that it was Adidas’ intention to launch this sneaker in the hopes to resurface a controversy of oppression? The ugliness of the sneaker is reason enough to hate it, and the first thing I thought of when I saw them had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with slavery. S

yes, these are problematic, in a number of ways. also, the race card doesn’t exist. if you think so and frequently speak on it, well clearly you have privilege and have never been a victim of racism— in a personal, structural, or institutional way. oh, and before you go there, ‘reverse racism’— also not a thing.

hayleyhatcherm 10 months agoUgly. So ugly. Was Akon racist when he had a huge image of hands in shackles as his stage set at his concerts? The shoes are lame, but people will stir it up, just to stir it up. Its pretty insulting to imply that only black people buy sports gear or that they are going to buy into a racist marketing ploy as victims. P.S…gracew2..so self indulgent and annoying.

graysonmitchella 10 months agoFor this to be racist, it has to imply that only black men wear Adidas. Shackles aren’t inherently racist, unless directed towards those with enslaved ancestors in a racist context. They’re just shoes, free for someone of any color or background to buy.

lol the race card huh. sometimes the most uneducated, neglected and socially unexpected people get the biggest reaction by pulling the race card. if anyone is oppressing or disrespecting your race its the people who continually peel the scab and can’t be content with the equal rights they gave been given. you don’t like then fine, DON’T BUY THEM.
