Donald Trump Thinks Scotland Rejected Independence Because Of "Ugly Windfarms"

Another day in the world of Mr Trump. Does he mean tilting at them?

Donald Trump said Alex Salmond "absolutely" lost Scotland's independence referendum because of "ugly windmills".

The US businessman and reality TV star told Radio 4's Today programme on Friday that energy-producing windmills "ruining the landscape" were the key factor in Scotland's rejection of independence.

Trump had extensive dealings with Salmond over his development of a major golf resort on the Aberdeenshire coast. But he ended up unsuccessfully suing the Scottish government after it decided to build an experimental offshore windfarm nearby.

Polling by Lord Ashcroft suggests it was concerns about currency union and the economy, rather than windfarms, which led to Scotland rejecting independence in last week's vote.

Or, as pro-independence artist Greg Moodie put it:

It's all about windfarms. #indyref
