1. Guoliang Tunnel – Huixian, Xinxiang, Henan Province of China

Although it looks like it could have only been constructed through natural causes, this 3/4 mile tunnel did not exist until 1972 when isolated villagers were determined to discover a world beyond the Taihang Mountains.

2. Millau Viaduct (The World's Tallest Bridge) – Southern France

This beautiful bridge towers above at 1,125 feet, connecting France to Spain via Millau, ascending over the valley.

3. Atlanterhavsveien (The Atlantic Road) – Norway

This winding highway covers scenes of all terrains over a mere 8-kilometer stretch, linking little islands in the sea along the way!

4. Transfăgărășan – Romania

The second-highest paved road in Romania, its curves were created as a military route in the early 1970s so there would be easy access among the mountains should the Soviets invade.

5. Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road – United Arab Emirates

This 7.3-mile maze up and around a mountain was once referred to as "the greatest driving road in the world." Its foothills include natural hot springs, with other ponds and pools scattered throughout the drive.

6. State Route 95 (Bicentennial Byway) – Southeast Utah

This byway may not be the most major — it mainly functions for tourism access to Lake Powell — but went from a dirt road in the 1930s to the real paved thing in 1976 upon the nation's 200th birthday as just one part of the entire Trail of the Ancients.

7. Seven Mile Bridge – Marathon Key, Florida

The Overseas Highway dates back to 1909, when it was initially a railroad. Though renovated many times, much of the original bridge is still intact and used as recreational fishing piers.

Widely known as the "world's most dangerous road," this one winds onward for 38 miles without a barricade.

9. Bixby Bridge (Pacific Coast Highway) – Big Sur, California

Situated between Carmel and San Francisco, this bridge made it possible to inhabit Big Sur in the winter time. It remains one of the tallest single-span bridges worldwide.

This panoramic beauty of the Western Alps has been traveled since the 15th century when mules would traverse it as a trade route.

11. Lysebotn Road – Norway

This route through the valleys of southwest Norway has 27 hairpin turns and helps visitors traverse the best spots for BASE jumping. It's only open in the summer, because otherwise it's covered with ice.
