1. Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Germany
Originally built to house Germany's political elite during the Cold War, the Government Bunker still stands today — partially preserved as a museum, but remains mostly dismantled. But hey, 10 miles of empty tunnels beneath 360 feet of slate rock can keep you pretty secure, come Armageddon. BYOB — and supplies.
2. Warsaw, Poland
Want to stay aboveground? Make yourself at home in the Safe House, where you can enjoy a spacious pool, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a wraparound verandah. All of which can be closed up with concrete panels, roller doors, metal shutters, and yes, a drawbridge. Just pray the Apocalypse gives you enough warning to lock it up.
3. White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia
For 30 years, The Greenbrier Bunker remained a secret relocation facility for Congress, buried beneath the west wing of a popular resort — until The Washington Post blew the lid off everything. Now you can host corporate meetings there, but don't let that get you down. You can still ride out the end times in a bunk bed!
4. Longyearbyen, Norway
Just over 800 miles from the North Pole, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a backup to the world's agricultural gene banks — a Noah's ark for seeds. And since it's constructed 400 feet into a sandstone mountain and another 425 feet above sea level, you'll be nice and safe when the world goes to hell, probably.
5. Pyongyang, North Korea
OK, so depending on how close you are with Kim Jong-il, North Korea's capital city Pyongyang is apparently the place to be when the Apocalypse happens. In addition to "some 8,000 underground military facilities," the country boasts a secret railway network that stretches for dozens of miles. Allegedly. Scope out this option first.
6. Mount Yamantau, Russia
7. Bugarach, France
Bugarach attracted a lot of weirdos in 2012 — most of which believed the mountain peak Pic de Bugarach contained an alien spaceship — but listen, what if they're right next time? Come Doomsday, you might have to share a room with a New Ager, but until then, enjoy the French countryside with the 200 permanent residents.
8. Washington, D.C.
You might think our nation's capital would be the first place to crumble in the wake of Armageddon, but nestled at the foot of the Capitol Building is a three-story underground bunker for lawmakers. And unlike other bunkers we've covered, this one includes hundreds of thousands of feet of fiber-optic cable. Don't cancel Netflix.
9. Mount Weather, Virginia
10. Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado
Designed to withstand a 30-megaton nuclear explosion, the Cheyenne Mountain bunker sits comfortably behind a 25-ton blast door almost one mile into solid granite. NORAD's Alternate Command Center works out of here. Just don't get sick please, because that stuff spreads.
