Bunker living doesn’t get any better than at the Greenbrier, a Forbes-rated four star hotel. In the 1950s, the location was created as an emergency housing complex for members of Congress but was never used, despite having been stocked with 30 years’ worth of food during its first decade of existence.
2. The Kennedy Bunker, Florida
No other name spells out privilege and wealth more so than “Kennedy” so one can expect that this Peanut Island bunker was once equipped with all the bells and whistles, though it has been turned into a museum in recent years.
3. Emergency Seat of the Constitutional Organs of the Federal Republic, Germany
The Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler shelter, nestled under vast vineyards by the same name, has been abandoned since 1997 because of its exorbitant maintenance cost, which means you can move right on in once the Four Horsemen come to town. Remember to grab some grapes on the way down!
4. The Adirondack Missile Silo (Upstate, NY)
It may not look like much from the outside, but the Adirondack Missile Silo or “Silo House” as it has come to be known, features several stories of bomb-proof housing under its surface. The airplane runway leading up to the property will also ensure you get to safety quickly once the end of the world begins.
5. Atlas E Missile Bay (Kansas)
You can relax on your porch swing, until the apocalypse comes that is. Thankfully, you’ll only be a hop and a skip away from the extra-secure Atlas E missile bay, where luxurious living quarters await you.
6. Dixia Cheng, Beijing’s Underground City
What’s better than an underground bunker to hunker down in? An entire city. Located under Beijing’s city center, Dixia Cheng is a giant network of underground tunnels that once served as part of Beijing’s defense strategy. It has been closed for renovation for several years, which means it’ll probably be shiny and new by the time Armageddon decides to show its ugly face.
7. The Wikileaks Lair in Stockholm’s White Mountains
If you’re ok with snuggling up to massive data servers, then this is the place for you. Located, Dr. Evil-style, inside of a mountain, this impenetrable facility holds thousands of secrets. Sounds cozy!
8. The Underwater Hilton Maldives Resort
When the world outside is crumbling, why not head down to sleep with the fishes, literally. This particular room in the resort used to serve as a lounge but thankfully for those escaping the apocalypse, it is now a bedroom equipped with every modern comfort.
9. Charlie Hull Shelter, Montana
Montana’s Charlie Hull Shelter once functioned as a co-op for families belonging to the Elizabeth Clare Prophet Church, who all believed the Earth was set to self-destruct in 1990. People eventually figured out the prediction was a wee bit off and today, only Charlie Hull and a few helpers still reside there.
