Let's Look Back At Just How White Past Oscar Winners Have Been

Blinded by the white!

Much has been made of the stunning lack of diversity among this year's crop of Oscar nominees.

But the problem is well rooted in Oscar history, as this video from Norwegian animator Bård Edlund shows.

"It kind of surprised me a little," Edlund told BuzzFeed News of the lack of racial diversity among this year's nominees.

"Obviously, I am well aware of the overall diversity problem in Hollywood, both when it comes to race and gender, but I personally felt like black actors had been making good inroads at awards ceremonies in recent years."

"I wanted to check to see how true that was in terms of raw numbers, and also take a look at nominations for Hispanic and Asian people," he said.

Edlund's video only includes those who actually won the awards, not the total number of people nominated.

After 86 years of the Academy Awards, here are all the black people Edlund found who have won awards for Best Actor or Actress.

José Ferrer is fairly lonely as the sole Hispanic person to win the top acting prize.

While Ben Kingsley, who is of Indian descent, and Yule Brenner, who has Mongolian heritage, are the only Asian people to win either Best Actor or Best Actress.

Black actors have done better in the supporting categories, winning 10 awards.

Four Hispanic people have taken home a statue for Best Supporting Actor or Actress.

No Asian actor has won either supporting award since 1984.

Only two black writers have claimed the top screenwriting prizes.

While no Hispanic people have won either award.

No Asians either.

The Best Director award has never been won by a black person.

Alfonso Cuarón made history last year, becoming the first Hispanic director to win the top prize.

Ang Lee has had twin victories in this category, but he's the only Asian person to take home the statue.

Let's hope Oscar voters in future years will remember Lupita's wise words.
