RCMP officer John Spaans was just trying to enjoy a nice vacation, but people kept calling his cellphone to ask for drugs. "They were very persistent," he tells BuzzFeed Canada, adding that some sent text messages with their orders.

"For quite some time I’d been getting wrong number phone calls, and getting asked for people I don’t know," said the officer, who is with the Boyle RCMP detachment in Alberta.

But it was during his vacation in the U.S. that callers started using slang to indicate they were trying to buy drugs. The people had no clue they were calling a Mountie.

"They probably felt I was being hard to get because I didn't want to do business with them," Cpl. Spaans said.

He said people used nicknames for the person they were looking for, and then at least one said the alleged dealer's real name. It happened to be the same name as someone the Boyle and Athabasca RCMP detachments were investigating for possible drug trafficking.

"The information inadvertently provided to police was used to obtain a search warrant on an apartment in the Town of Athabasca where illegal drugs were found by police, according to an RCMP release.

Trevor Dennis, 41, of Athabasca is now charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and possession of cocaine.

“Police work doesn’t get much easier than this,” said Boyle RCMP detachment commander Sergeant Kevin McGillivray.

"The takeaway lesson for anybody out there is to make sure you have the right numbers down — or don’t deal drugs," Cpl. Spaans said. "Probably more the second one."
