The NBA Is Selling Jason Collins Jerseys To Meet "Unprecedented" Demand

Everybody wants to wear No. 98.

Last Sunday, Jason Collins became the first out athlete to play in an NBA game. Today, Jason Collins jerseys will go on sale even though he's only on a 10-day contract.

Vicky Picca, the NBA’s senior vice president for licensing and business affairs, said that the league was receiving an "unprecedented" amount of inquiries from fans who want to own a jersey with Collins' name on it.

Collins’s jersey number of choice is 98, in honor of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student from Wyoming who was murdered in 1998.

On Sunday, the Nets scrambled to get Collins in uniform for a game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Collins wore No. 46, a jersey the team travels with in case of emergencies.

On Sunday's game, he logged 11 minutes, got two rebounds and finished with a plus-8 for his time on the court.

He tweeted after the Nets' 108-102 victory over the Lakers.

What a day! Great win tonight @BrooklynNets over my hometown @Lakers. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey.

Today, Collins will get to have his first practice with his new teammates. On Wednesday, he will presumably wear a No. 98 uniform in Portland against the Trail Blazers.

His jersey is available for purchase here.
