Update: Since this post went up, the original version of the video has been taken off YouTube. We’ve reached out to Conrad’s rep for comment. Slate got a hold of author Lemony Snicket, whose books were destroyed in the video, and he made the following statement:
“It has always been my belief that people who spend too much time with my work end up as lost souls, drained of reason, who lead lives of raving emptiness and occasional lunatic violence. What a relief it is to see this documented.”

chuckythetiger 3 weeks agothis lady inflicted physical pain on me. this is my SECOND favorite book series of all time (after HP of course. i’m a Potterhead all the way) that was a terrible idea to begin with, why the heck would you waste an ENTIRE book series just to glue it on a box?! and don’t even get me started on how she put them in the wrong order… >:-(

zachl12 3 weeks agoNot even the entire series. She had 3 Book 1’s and 3 Book 6’s. This makes ZERO sense and is truly depressing. She took the video down (her original posting of it) almost immediately, so she must have been thoroughly embarrassed. Perfect example of how arts and crafts don’t always combine well with the consumption of drugs.

i don’t really see anything wrong with this, she’s just finding more use out of something she doesn’t use anymore. and you don’t know that she’s going to just throw away the pages of the book, she said in the video that she uses them to cover the walls of her office. it’s the same thing as taking old clothing and shredding it in order to make bags or accessories.

nataliet9 9 months agoWow so many ppl hating on her. She can do as she pleases with her own books no matter who wrote them. I understand donating books I really do but if she cuts up books to glue the bindings on a box then oh well. Everyone needs to get over it. They’re books. Boohoo what snicket said or feels. He made his money off the books so stfu! Lauren do your thing girl! Be creative. Nothing wrong with being crafty with any materials! <3 LC

This is a horrible craft project just because of the waste of good books, but it’s been making the rounds on Pinterest and its clones, so it’s not like it’s Lauren Conrad’s fault someone told her to Martha Stewart this mess up. Brightside - if you do a good enough job faking a row of books, you’ve got a great spot to hide your stash. Maybe worth a try with books that aren’t worth reading anyway, like the works of Ayn Rand.

As an “author” of a book herself, she wasn’t very savvy. She should have directed everyone to purchase 10 or more copies or the book she wrote, and then cut those up to paste on the box. That would have increased her book sales at the same time, and actually created some interest in the book she wrote. Many people don’t know she ever wrote a book. Instead, she’s got me going to look for these Lemony Snicket things, which I have heard of but not read or owned. Watch to see how sales of Lemony Snicket do on Amazon this month.

What kind of stupid craft is this? You know how to make it look like you have a shelf full of books? PUT THE BOOKS ON YOUR SHELF!!! If you want easy storage, buy a freakin’ basket!

vespo 9 months agoThis totally defeats the idea of making crafts. Why blow hundreds of dollars to buy NEW books only to rip them apart and glue them to a perfectly ordinary box? She could have taken a few small pieces of wood and painted them to resemble the spines of the books and DONATE the real ones to people who’ll actually read them! What a waste, I can’t believe this woman is an “author”.
