Bioluminescent Surfing
Turns out the Lingulodinium polyedrum phytoplankton responsible for red tide algae blooms off the coast of Southern California are bioluminescent. When agitated, the non-toxic red tide glows neon blue, which makes for some pretty rad night surfing.

rainbowcrab a year agoCoooool! I’ve heard of this. Awesome video, Cates! Nice when cool sh*t like this happens naturally- rather than from nuclear waste or a spill of used oil from McDonalds or something…. Great- now I want a breakfast McMuffin.

BuzzThrill a year agoI experienced this phenomenon in Mulege, Mexico as a boy. One thing that I remember being very cool was taking a handful of sand and throwing it out into the water. Wherever the little bits of sand hit it would light up. In my little boy mindset I recall it looking a bit like machine gun fire tracers on metal. Super cool!

plemur a year agoIt’s really an incredible experience. Walking along the wet sand, each step sends a little shock wave out that makes them glow for about 6 inches around your foot. Throwing rocks into the water creates glowing splashes. It feels like another world. It’s so enthralling and calming.
