Here's The Exclusive Trailer For The Terrifying Movie About Melanie Griffith's Lions

No animals were harmed in the making of Roar, but 70 members of the cast and crew may have been.

Remember those photos of teenage Melanie Griffith and her family's pet lion?

Well, Griffith, her mother Tippi Hedren (of Marnie and The Birds), and her stepfather Noel Marshall (producer of The Exorcist) didn't just live with lions, they also made one of the most notorious animal movies of all time, 1981's Roar.

In April, Roar is being re-released and BuzzFeed has the exclusive trailer:

Marshall, who wrote and directed the movie, stars as Hank, a preservationist whose family — played by Hedren, Griffith, and Marshall's two sons — visits him in Africa.

Hank neglected to mention to them that he shares his home with dozens of lions, tigers, and cheetahs, all actually owned by Marshall and his family.

Hedren and Marshall were passionate about big cats, but that didn't make it any easier or safer to make a movie with so many untrained animals.

Dozens of people were injured during the five years it took to shoot Roar, including Marshall, Hedren, and Griffith.

There's no denying this movie was a labor of love. An insane labor of love.

Drafthouse Films will be re-releasing Roar in select theaters on Apr. 17.
