Sheffield United Retracts Training Offer To Convicted Rapist Ched Evans

Following a string of high-profile criticisms, the club's offer was retracted this evening.

ITV News reports that Sheffield United has retracted its offer to allow convicted rapist Ched Evans to train at the club.

The broadcaster has a statement from the club:

Sheffield United will not be used to promote the view that professional footballers should be treated differently, as has been the want of certain sections of the media and various commentators.

During this whole period, we have been served a timely reminder of what we have been throughout our history: Sheffield United is a family and community club that, even in times of adversity, will remain strong and grow from its experiences.

Earlier in the month Jessica Ennis-Hill, the Olympic heptathlete, said she wanted her name removed from one of the Bramall Lane stands if Evans ever represented the club again.

Singer David Berry, who resigned as a club patron, saying he wished to make a "moral stand", told ITV:

I'm very pleased to hear it but why has it taken so long? And still, where are all the men in this? I haven't seen anyone commenting from football clubs.

I'm rather disappointed at men not supporting this girl and making any gestures. They've said nothing about the contract - we're still only halfway there.

Evans was released on licence having served two and a half years of a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old woman.
