A Rugby Player With A Broken Finger Held A Woman For An Hour To Stop Her Jumping Off A Bridge

Michael Owen, 22, is hero of the day.

This is Michael Owen with his girlfriend, Jemma. He's a 6-foot-5-inch rugby player from Cwmavon who works as a doorman.

The pair were travelling when they noticed a distressed woman standing on the edge of a bridge over the busy M4 motorway near Chippenham, Wiltshire.

Owen, 22, told the BBC: "My girlfriend saw her first and we were trying to stop the traffic. When I got to her I managed to get my arms through the barriers to hold onto her.

"I have a broken finger from rugby so I was obviously in a bit of pain but I managed to get my grip."

"Through the whole process I was just trying to talk to her," he said. "One of the things that clicked was that she liked my accent so I started talking about the rugby."

Owen ended up staying with the woman for an hour, because she was too scared to climb down from the bridge.

Owen's sister, Sarah, said she was hugely proud of her brother.

"I am just so proud of him for his actions, I could just burst with pride, and I know the entire family could too," she said.

"He has an amazing personality and a huge heart, which is evident from his actions here."

An elderly man also stopped to help before the police and fire service arrived.

The woman was eventually taken to hospital, uninjured.

Owen told the BBC: "My family were overwhelmed when I told them. I just think I did what any other person would have done if they'd been in my situation."
