Diane Abbott Says Labour Will Close Gap With Tories "In 12 Months"

"We’ve had a pretty difficult 12 months, partly [because of] Jeremy’s enemies in the party, partly commentators, but we have the right policies and we have the right leader," the shadow home secretary said.

Labour will have closed a 17-point polling gap with the Conservative party by this time next year, shadow home secretary Diane Abbott has said.

Abbott, one of party leader Jeremy Corbyn's closest allies, said she was "confident" Labour would catch up in the next 12 months.

"We’ve had a pretty difficult 12 months, partly [because of] Jeremy’s enemies in the party, partly commentators, but we have the right policies and we have the right leader," she said.

Labour's voting intention is currently at a seven-year low – dating back to when Gordon Brown was prime minister – at 25%, with the Tories on 42% according to the latest YouGov poll.

December has seen two underwhelming by-election performances for the party: losing its deposit as the Lib Dems unseated Zac Goldsmith in Richmond Park, and coming fourth in Sleaford and North Hykeham.

Appearing on BBC1’s The Andrew Marr Show, this week presented by former BBC political editor Nick Robinson, Abbott said the by-election results were "disappointing", but there was a limit to what could be learned from them.

"I think we are coming together now, we’ve got a new chief whip, Nick Brown, who’s one of the most experienced party managers in the House of Commons, and I think that as we come together, as you hear less noises off, I believe we can close the polling gap," she said.

Abbott said reports of Labour's demise were "much exaggerated; we are the largest socialist democratic party in Europe".

"And actually that huge surge in membership is due to the current leadership: We have the right policies on the NHS and the economy. And, as you know, the Tories are fatally split on Europe. It consumed John Major’s leadership, it consumed David Cameron, and I believe it will consume Theresa May."
