A Man Has Been Charged For Sending "Malicious" Facebook Messages To An MP

Police said messages send on 3 December, one day after multiple MPs received online above over British airstrikes in Syria.

A man has been charged with "malicious communications" after sending abusive Facebook messages to a Member of Parliament, Metropolitan police have said.

23-year-old Craig Wallace, also known as Muhammad Mujahid Islam, was arrested at his home in Brent, northwest London on Saturday in connection with the allegations of messages sent on 3 December.

Following a Commons vote on airstrikes in Syria on Wednesday 2 December, in which 397 to 223 MPs voted in favour of military action, several MPs reported receiving abusive messages on social media.

Labour MP for Walthamstow Stella Creasy said that staff at her office had received abusive phone calls, and that she had been sent pictures of dead babies on Twitter.

While there were also reports of a protest outside her home, they turned out to be false.

Labour MPs Simon Danczuk and Neil Coyle contacted police over abusive messages they received following Wednesday's vote on airstrikes, the BBC said.

Police did not name the MP who received abusive messages, believed to have been sent on Thursday 3 December, but said they did not represent a London constituency.

Wallace is due to appear before Hendon Magistrates' Court on Monday 7 December.
