"Star Trek" Actress Grace Lee Whitney Dies At 85

The actress was famous for playing Yeoman Janice Rand on Star Trek: The Original Series.

Original Star Trek cast member Grace Lee Whitney has died, her son confirmed to the Fresno Bee.

The actress died in her home in Coarsegold, California, at the age of 85.

Whitney is from Ann Arbor, Michigan, and was raised by an adoptive family, NBC News reported.

Lee Whitney starred in a number of Star Trek productions starting in 1966, including multiple television series as well as films.

Her character, Janice Rand, was the personal assistant of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) on the USS Enterprise. She eventually became Kirk's love interest, but was later written off the show.

She reprised her role in four Star Trek films starting in 1979. She also appeared in a 1996 episode of Star Trek: Voyager, according to Hollywood Reporter.
