After waking up one day having lost the sight in her left eye, Walters puzzled doctors for a month, struggling to diagnose her. When she brought up the fact she had a pet cat, doctors finally thought of the solution.

Speaking to WTOL News, Dr. Kris Brickman said that only 40% of cats carry the bacteria, which is harmful to humans but not the cats themselves.

"It can affect the eyes, because what it does is increases blood vessels that creates problems — called antinomies... It can also cause some liver problems and can get into the spinal fluids and create meningitis."
